    1. Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] SMITH, Nicol b. 1794
    2. thank you! Believe it or not, my SMITHs came from Shetland - a group of Islands off Scotland. Although there are a lot of Smiths in Shetland, the family managed to get back to my 3x Great Grandfather a James SMITH (such an unusual name, eh??). After much research and comparing notes, I found the parents of James, but am stuck there as so far no records have come to light. James had a brother William who had a son Nicol, etc. Actually both men named their lst born sons Nicol so the usual Scots naming paterns tend to add to confusion. It is William's Nicol who came to the U.S. at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. Traced him and his son Malcolm to Howard County, Iowa. Hoping to establish some contact with descendants of Nicol or Malcolm in the U.S. Have recently made contact with descendant from this Nicol's son that stayed in Scotland. He had a son who became a member of parliament and gained a "sir" title. Do you belong to the SMITH board or list?
