Apparently in some places it is now illegal to make gravestone rubbings - some suggestions it could damage the stones. Keep wondering if it was the state of Maine? I have photos of many family stones some going back to later 1800's. It appears many of my ancestors in Scotland could not afford stones or they have disappeared. The oldest gravestone photo is of my G.G. Grandfather Laurence Smith who died 1857 whilst ling fishing off Shetland. His body did not wash ashore for about 5 months and he is buried at Maywick where he washed up. His sons erected a stone and it is now a sort of tourist attraction in that it is mentioned in one of the guide books. The stone is attended to by one of my cousins over there. The wind and no doubt salt spray is very hard on the stone. I've used sunlight and mirrors or very strong flashlights to cast shadows on old stones. It sometimes can help give you enough of an outline to see what's written. Looking through different colours of clear plastic at the stones can also help sometimes. Someday I'm going to try a laser level which produces a long straight line to see if that would help show up faint depressions. Moss growth here is the most common reason you can't read old stones. It seems more gentle to take pictures of the stones in rubbings take pressure to make.
