They were from an era where people did that a lot.  My grandmother wrote a poem about a girl who had drowned herself, blaming her parents and a local boy, and it actually became a song later, and people still remember the song.  I transcribed it when I found it, which was hard to do, because she had written it and sent it to my prospective grandfather, who carried it in his wallet for years.    While I was transcribing it slowly, my mouth began to drop, as I realized it wasn't a love poem, but a story about a girl who killed herself by drowning in front of her little brother, because her parents had believed a story told about her by a boy in the area.  He had slandered her, evidently, and ruined her reputation, and her parents had thought the story was true.  By the time I got done transcribing, I was horrified!  It was quite a poem.  If you ever want it, let me know.  MYRA HERRON Tempus Fugit; Memento Mori  (Time Flies; Remember, you will Die.)
