Hello, Someone has e-mailed me and asked me if I knew about the ship, SS Volendam, which has carrying hundreds of children from Great Britain to Canada in April 1940. I became curious so I'm in the process of looking it up. So far I'm finding a few sites which are interesting to read: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/34/a4297034.shtml http://www.learningcurve.gov.uk/homefront/evacuation/overseas/default.htm Several sites offer pictures of it, like this one: http://www.maltaconvoyaug42.freewebspace.com/myotherships.html The ship and another ship of the same month are mentioned in this book: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5400932 I just noticed in the first article (first URL) that the parents had been notified, and that some of the boys expressed a wish to get on another ship and continue their voyage to Canada. Did the children get to Canada? And, if they did, did they remain there or go back to their parents after the War? Hi again, I made a typo last night. It was August 1940 that the ship was torpedoed (but rescued). And, just a reminder that the "Child Migrant Scheme" was from 1860 to 1930's ! Over 100,000 children were "shipped to Canada." So, the children being shipped to Canada in the 1940's were because of World War II, and I think it was with the permission of the parents. Betty P.S. I should come up with a new word -- a memor-o? Typing April wasn't a typo; I had remembered wrong. :o) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty" <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> To: <BRITISHHOMECHILDREN-L@rootsweb.com>; <can-usa-migration@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 24, 2009 7:19 PM Subject: [CAN-USA-MIG] SS Volendam - 1940 "British Children to Canada" > Hello, > > Someone has e-mailed me and asked me if I knew about the ship, SS > Volendam, which has carrying hundreds of children from Great Britain to > Canada in April 1940.
