    1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Discussion about the Message Boards

    3. Hello, Because I am the Administrator for this List, I can mention a problem with the Message Boards at RootsWeb. This week I have experienced the 2nd or 3rd time that I have posted a response to a query on a Message Board, and the Admin of that Board wrote to tell me she had "deleted" my posting ! (Same Admin 3 times during past year or so !) I wrote to ask why. She told me that an employee of the R.W. Help Desk Administrator's office had noticed that I had mentioned a Google / Book in my posting. It seems there is a law on the books that people cannot mention "commercial web sites" on the Message Boards. And the "administration people" decided that www.google.com is a "commercial web site" and it cannot be mentioned on the Message Boards. I immediately e-mailed the Message Board Help Desk and complained. I explained in a quiet, intelligent way that "Google" is not a bad word ! And that Google is very important to on-line researchers, and that "free" on-line books - thousands available through Google - are extremely important to researchers ! The "boss" e-mailed back and did not answer my questions. He just offered a page of "Community Guidelines" and "How to be an Administrator." I don't know if he is the same "boss" for the Mailing Lists, but the "boss" for the Lists (with same name) usually answers my questions and concerns. What is frustrating to me is that many times I spend 20 minutes early in the morning looking for answers to a query on a Message Board, and I post the information and offer census information, etc. And, then a "Board Admin" immediately "deletes" what I wrote. When I type something onto a Board -- I cannot retrieve it ! I thought if other people wrote to the Message Board Help Desk and explained how important www.google.com is to on-line researchers, and genealogists in general, the "administration" will take more notice of the problem ! www.rootsweb.com Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) List Administrator P.S. I'm still thinking about creating a Message Board to go along with this List. But the more I learn about how Boards are administered, I don't like it. Researchers have already reminded me that the "boss" of www.rootsweb.com IS www.ancestry.com which IS "a commercial web site." As someone said, "the pot calling the kettle black."
