well, I just spent a day last Saterday, in a fire watch tower....1,000 ' up off ground, tip top of a moutain....trick is to never look where you BEEN....but where your GOING. View is amazing, freezeing is not, you run some 100 ft. to a porta potty, and make it back, ( there should be a track record here?). Each shift is 12-14 hrs long, except in a fire sighting, then your stuck....usually you have a few relief folks to back you up, but not always. Some of these towers have been mammed for a 100 yrs..or close to it. THe one I was in has been mammed for 78 yrs...this is tower number 2. The legs are steele I-beams...massive. There are no emities...food is brought up every 4 th day...trash hauled out the delivery day....your there for about 5-6 months...rattlesnakes, deer, bears, BIG pussycats...foxes, skunks, and racoons..to high for birds and the wind currents would sabatoge any effort make to flight...be a great place for a hang glider.....the view, 100+ miles, 200 on a good day, then you see the Pacific Ocean....today we have a forest fire starting, it was at 120 acres this afternoon....praying the rain does hit Monday... Hi Linda, You do important work ! There are 2 phrases: "Don't look back" and "Don't look down." As a child, I didn't like it when my father drove over a very high bridge (1940's/1950's).
