Hello, Yes, working - in the heights - is very dangerous ! Even today "window cleaners" on skyscrapers are sometimes killed. Perhaps you have seen documentaries about how the major bridges in North America have been built. I remember seeing / hearing that workers have "fallen to their deaths." Some not going into the water but some falling into cement ! http://www.nycroads.com/crossings/brooklyn/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Gate_Bridge The one in Brooklyn was completed in the 1880's and the one in San Francisco was completed in the 1930's. Are there major, well-known bridges in Canada? Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) List Administrator P.S. This summer I was reading up on the first railroads and the first building of RR tracks in New England. And I found a small book about them. One picture amazed me. It showed a picture of a "covered bridge" in New England. That was OK; there are many in our area; some still used; some are just to look at. But, what surprised me was that the train tracks went across the "top" of the covered bridge. So, the "horse & buggies" went through the bridge and the trains went across the top of the bridge ! :o( And, .. creating places where train tracks could be laid - was also a dangerous occupation !!
The Mackinac Bridge in the straits between upper and lower Michigan is a good example of a bridge of this type. And one of my husband's best friends was killed when he fell from the partially-completed bridge into the straits below. mas -----Original Message----- From: can-usa-migration-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:can-usa-migration-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Betty Sent: Thursday, October 08, 2009 6:19 AM To: can-usa-migration@rootsweb.com Subject: [CAN-USA-MIG] Working "high in the sky" "Brooklyn Bridge" Hello, Yes, working - in the heights - is very dangerous !
