    1. Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Simple surnames
    2. Have several McDonalds in my tree as my daughter married one There a couple of others too. Really suggest you try to get Lucille Campey's book on the Scots to the Maritmes if your ancestors were there early in Canada. When you have more common names, it is wise to contact all older living family members and ask lots of questions. Do this in collateral lines as well as your direct line. Record all clues and gather every speck of information. So often there is one person per generation who is interested in family history. They have information. There is often a "gossip" in every family who can be a goldmine (could be a cousin, aunt or uncle). Keep in mind this "gossip" may also tell fibs to hide any family secrets. Thus you need to verify the information via documents. As my main paternal Smith family originated in Shetland, thanks to a wonderful man called Tony Gott and his marvelous research site http://bayanne.info/Shetland/ some of the research was easier.
