Wish that were true! Actually have a couple of collateral lines of Smith. My Grandma (Hird) Smith's sister married a Smith, but no relation to her husband. Have traced some of that family, but it seems the only son ended up on west coast of the U.S.A. Did find the granddaughter and we keep in track. Believe two or three of the daughters of G. Aunt Maggie's family ended up in the U.S. Slowly working on that. So if any of your Smith's have a Hird/Herd connection, could be a connection. Nope, I cannot say that any of these people ring any family bells for me. There are just SO many Smiths.. and they seem to run in all ethnic groups, as well. Hard to put a background nationality on them.
