    3. Before you can start looking you have to know where to look and for that you need to find this person in the census of 1861 1871 or 1881 for Canada and Ontario. In the census record is his address as a street address or as a rural township allocation of range and lot. The census will also tell you what municipality is located in and then if you are near by you can visit the municipal offices for the township and view their records for that property from transfer from Government to Private ownership either by land grant or purchase. I have not had much luck trying to find this information on line.
