Yes, and then further west there was Rupert's Land and the Territories mainly controlled by the Hudson Bay Company. Saskatchewan and Alberta became provinces in 1905 and the northern part of Manitoba joined the Province in 1912, shortly after my late father's birth. If you can't find someone on census in these Provinces, look under Territories - learned this the hard way.
