    1. [CAN-USA-MIG] DODD, Thomas b. abt 1813
    2. Is anyone researching the DODD family? Thomas Dodd married my 3x g. grandmother Agnes NICHOL 1839 in Argenteuil, Lower Canada. She was a widow of Valentine Albright with whom she had 6 children. Thomas & Agnes had three sons, Thomas, John and Edward - all born Canada. They moved to the U.S. and are buried in the Truxton, Cortland, N.Y. Looking for information on this family and any descendants. Lauraine

    1. [CAN-USA-MIG] SMITH, Nicol b. 1794
    2. Is anyone on the list researching the surname of SMITH? Interested in Nicol SMITH who immigrated to the U.S. around the start of the civil war. He ended up in Iowa and is buried there. Would very much like to make contact with anyone researching this Shetland family. Lauraine

    2. sorry about that! Thought I had written about my Grandfather being an iceman with my Dad and his brothers cutting ice from the Manitoba lake and that there had been some sort of TV program on the Yurts? I did take the CPU discussion to the person privately but guess not soon enough. Am blaming this on my tiredness from my cruise and not being on my own computer. My sincere apologies. 3. Being a "reasonably intelligent person" doesn't guarantee that you will understand everything about computers!!!! And they keep coming up with new things every day, too, just to confuse us more. Still and all, I love the thing.....and spend a lot of time on it, with genealogy mostly, and personal email. I do keep some financial records and have programs for addresses, etc. Think I would be lost without it now. And you are so right: many things that are impossible to figure out, seem unbelievably and STUPIDLY simple, once you find out how to do them!!! 1. Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Ice Boxes, and Yurts AND pointer trails Again

    3. I hear ya on son-in-law. <g> I had Vista for a few weeks just before Win 7 came out and I LOVE this one. One laptop here has Vista and no problems. Knock on wood. Thank goodness for g'children who will help you. It's me who has to help them. lol Never let the CPU out of sight either. I have a computer guru who comes to the house. Thank goodness. We've been building computers since 1993, I think. AnnE in MN not sure what version but imagine it is latest of some sort - is a business computer which is one of the reasonsf I did not change anything and certainly do not want to aggrevate my son-in-law. If it was my own computer would go in there and fix. I did not get Vista on my newest laptop - decided agin it after reading about various problems. I also do not use Adobe but use Foxit which is much smaller and less of a resource hog. My computer skills are not great, but love it. Struggle with somethings but have grandchildren who can help if I really get stuck. Have several niggling problems with email boxes and need to get that straightened out, but hate to let the cpu out of my sight for more than a day. 1. Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Ice Boxes, and Yurts AND pointer trails
    2. not sure what version but imagine it is latest of some sort - is a business computer which is one of the reasonsf I did not change anything and certainly do not want to aggrevate my son-in-law. 3. Had to smile at your account of how hard it was to copy, cut and paste........until someone showed you how! For some reason, the things that are the easiest sometimes are the hardest to figure out originally!!! -----Original Message----- From: can-usa-migration-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:can-usa-migration-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of syrnick@mts.net Sent: Sunday, August 02, 2009 8:28 PM To: can-usa-migration@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Ice Boxes, and Yurts Hi Ann: LOL - thanks a bunch. Can do that on both of my own laptops but use a different browser from this one. Am having problems even seeing where the URL is on this lappy and do not want to fool around as it is the loaners work computer. Would hate to screw up any of their set up. Normally have no problems copy and paste, but even the mouse pointer here is driving me batty. Seems to have a tail which becomes 40 mice and difficulty getting to point at things. Having no problem copying text to print, just URLs - no idea where to hover and click, etc. Using this machine very short term, so not too important. For any seniors on this list or others who struggle with copy, cut and paste, please note that it took me ages to master the technique so do not give up. Find a friend who will demonstrate on a computer and then do it in their presence a couple of times. Yes, you will feel a bit dopey, but it is one of the most valuable time savers to learn. Never could understand what confused me so much once it was learned. 3. To remove pointer trails: Go to Control Panel. Select Mouse. You should see a place about Pointer Trails. Does it say Display Pointer Trails? If so, uncheck it. I too used Firefox and loved it but now that I'm running Win 7 & I use IE 8 and it's just fine. Do you know what version IE it is? You should be able to type the URL in the box way up at the top. Do you not see that? Guess I should be doing all this away from the list. Sorry. AnnE good luck If only I dared to remove those tails. Most annoying things. My loaner is using Windows Internet Explorer - I use FIREFOX - the safest browser around. All things are rather small on this one and the whole things looks so different from my own pages. The email page looks familiar as it is my own which can be accessed when travelling. Will be heaven to get back to my own CPU and browser. Am always a bit nervous when using someone else's computer. Keep thinking the YURTs were some sort of hut used in Russia somewhere? Am sure I saw a TV program showing them. 3. G'Day, Here downunda some folks in the city or big towns had iceboxes, but out bush where ice could not be got, Aussies used a contraption called a "Koolgardie safe" -- named after a remote mining town Koolgardie. How they work is a tin box of various kinds either had a pan built in at the bottom, or sat in a tin pan, with water in it; hessian was draped over the box so the ends dangled in the water, the capilliarity of the hessian would draw water up and the heat of the atmosphere dried it out, causing a cooling effect (a bit like an evaporative air conditioner). They actually work very well, I've used improvised Koolgardies at various times, the best thing for improvising is a steel washing machine drum sitting in a pan with a hessian sack for the cover. knew a bloke who kept meat frsh for a week in 40 degree heat in one. and yurts are fairly popular with the alternative community around Australia. Wishing everyone well, Willow in Australia

    2. If only I dared to remove those tails. Welcome back on solid land, Lauraine Glad your cruise was a nice one! faye -----Original Message----- From: can-usa-migration-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:can-usa-migration-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of syrnick@mts.net Sent: Sunday, August 02, 2009 5:52 PM To: can-usa-migration@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Foods You First Ate as a Child in '40's Believe junket and puddings were made to get extra milk into children's diets. Mom used to make tapioca pudding - hated it unless she put a large dollop of jam on top. Keep in mind that milk was fairly cheap back and many families had a milk cow. Rennet was also used to make cottage cheese. Still in B.C. but back from the Alaskan cruise. Marvelous trip.
