    1. Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Hearing vs. Listening and Eavesdropping (my grandmother)
    2. Hi Betty: This is an interesting story and a shame you might never find out the truth. When my Dad had his DNA done for the Shetland DNA Project, one gentlement who had the lesser test had a match for 13 (if recall is correct). He had been adopted and after many years did find his Mother who was in her 90's but she refused to recognize him nor would she tell him who the father was. Another sad story. Perceived sins of the past will be brick walls for many for eons. 1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Hearing vs. Listening and Eavesdropping (my grandmother)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, My hubby has mentioned several times that many people do not have a hearing problem -- they have a listening-problem. And, I've told my maternal grandmother's story before. A brief version of her story is: She was born Feb. 1889, and at 3 mos. became a Ward of the State. At some point she went to live with John and Mary DEXTER. They were life-long residents of Killingly, CT, but had moved to MA ~1885. While in their late 50's, they adopted a little girl who had just turned 3. They changed her name to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER - after Mrs. DEXTER's maiden name. Mrs. Dexter died in Apr. 1899, and my grandmother was 10. She was taken to an orphanage in Boston. She would spend until she was ~20 in "homes." (Mr. Dexter died in 1905 at a State Hospital.) During her 8-10 years with the Dexter couple, different things happened. When she was young and important people came to call, she was hidden away in a back room of the house. One day, she was upstairs and heard that a man has visited. She decided to listen as he was talking just before he left. The man said, "Some day that little girl "must" find out who her real father is !" She never did ! But, this tells me that the Dexter adoptive parents "KNEW" who my grandmother's birth-parents were ! And, my grandmother never found out who gave birth to her. Because of all the hints and clues, my "educated guess" is that the Dexter's married daughter back in Killingly, CT, had a pregnancy outside of her marriage in the "summer of 1888." My grandmother tried to find out. My mother and her sisters tried to find out, and I have tried to find out. My grandmother had known her Adoptive parents' grandson. He had visited the home many times, and she remembered him as being a teen-age boy when she was a child. After she was married and had kids, she was able to get in touch with him. Earle YOUNG (only grandchild) stated that his mother, Clara, went to her dying day -- proclaiming that she didn't even know that her parents had adopted a little girl. I just pulled the report on her story out of a box, and will send a copy to a lady in CT. It is a long and complicated story. I wish I could find a book author who would be willing to turn the story into an historical novel. This lady in CT just received a surprise package in the mail, a whole pile of "old photos." Two of the photos were of Mrs. Dexter, and her mother, Mrs. Clark. She mailed me copies of the photos and I hope I receive them today. I very much want to compare my grandmother's photo to Mrs. Dexter's photo. The lady in CT and I have already compared her grandmother's picture to my grandmother's picture, and there is a strong family resemblance. If the new photos compare, then this lady in CT and I are probably, hopefully both descended from Mrs. Clark - thus we are "very distant cousins." The full name of Mrs. Clark in her older years was Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) (LAVARE) CLARK (1800-1883?), always in Westport, MA (US). IF I ever write up a better document on my grandmother, I will probably title it: Rhoda and Molly and Clara and Daisy. (Gr-grandma, Grandma, Mother, my grandmother, I hope.) (It would take a true miracle - to find out who the birth-father was !) Have a pleasant August weekend ! Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) List Administrator

    1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Book: "Indian Tribes of North America"
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I get a weekly e-mail from a genealogy publishing company in US, and they sometimes mention some of the books they have put up for sale. http://www.genealogical.com/products/The%20Indian%20Tribes%20of%20North%20America/5682.html I've never seen this book, so I don't know anything about it. And, I'm only posting it for the information. * I occasionally purchase history books from places, like eBay, IF they are very reasonable priced. One is "The Native Americans." (a coffee-table-type book) Perhaps others can recommend books which are informative. 1. [CAN-USA-MIG] 1930 census - free at Footnote
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I've been busy at home and don't remember whether someone has already mentioned this. "Footnote" is offering the 1930 census "free" for the month of August. I signed up and did a search a few days ago, and did another search for a few minutes ago. I found the census pages I wanted, but what I didn't find is a way to print out the pages. Is that not part of the "free service" they're offering this month? (I look at census pages through my library's HeritageQuest software - which is mostly only up to 1920.) Also, the messages this morning reminded me that I haven't seen my MassMoments daily e-mails for several weeks. I'll have to check into that. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) List Administrator (My mother was named after her grandmother, so she got the name, Elizabeth. During her school years, she hated the nickname, ..Lizzie .. so she gave herself the nickname, Betty. So, when her first daughter came along, there is no way she was naming me Elizabeth. Before that, when her sister helped out their grandmother during her last years, she would go over and check on her during the day. One day she noticed a few pieces of mail on the table in the hallway - which went unopened for a week. She asked her grandmother why. The grandmother replied: Because it is addressed to "Liz" _____ and my name is "not" Liz.)

    2. Lauraine, We have become a society of ( often ) uncaring individuals with a penchant for anonymity or the indifference of not acknowledging many negative perceptions as part of our own selves . ...not just in colonial times ! It is still a very common human condition ! We even try to soft-pedal truths and lies. We call them things like half-truths or fibs . In today's` time, we are subjected to both in commercials and other advertisements . As a child growing up in the fifties, I was subjected to many of these same lies . I was a bilingual eavesdropper that covered the fact of my absorption without a hint of understanding . It gave me a window to the souls of many people . Ahh ! There was definite satisfaction in my charade . I often felt that my ' little game ' dealt me an advantage that many of my peers were not privy to . Since becoming an adult, I had removed myself from my home town`s bigotry, but I still enjoy the occasional foray during family visits, however, my once prized use of the french language has suffered and I often can't understand a word that I'm hearing. Not an altogether strange thing in light of the fact that I often do not understand my wife`s use of the english language. Hearing problems ? ...Who, ...Me ...? - Naah ! 2. Myra: I would love to see the poem. This shows how important reputations were in earlier times when even a hint of gossip could tarnish a family. It is little wonder that our families glossed over and told fibs about some of the unsavory family events. Society was quite cruel in colonial times. Hi Listers, I recently learned that while hunting for an ancestor, who was "custom" married to a German immigrant, then cast out of the marriage w/children, her tribe has a hidden custom of when a tribal member dies, that they have not existed in life....another words, after their death, nothing was mentioned of them again, and as most tribes don't keep written records, only the story tellers know about them or their names of Indian customs, and great deeds done....Even though my ancestor was a SHAMAN, medicine woman of her tribe, as is one daughter....when she died, her body was hidden from view...and she was gone from the face of the Earth. And even today the secret of her burial place is known by few. I have looked for her for almost 10 years with little sucess except for the Census records from 1850 this way. Being American Indian, they were recorded, differently than the regular Census...ANY WAY, always check the tribal customs, so you don't end up spinning your wheels..there is lots on the internet about American Indian tribes, but check the locale of your ancestor as they variy in what and how they do their customs. Good Hunting. ~Linda~ "Loved ones" are your family tree, and lifes journey.

    3. They were from an era where people did that a lot.  My grandmother wrote a poem about a girl who had drowned herself, blaming her parents and a local boy, and it actually became a song later, and people still remember the song.  I transcribed it when I found it, which was hard to do, because she had written it and sent it to my prospective grandfather, who carried it in his wallet for years.    While I was transcribing it slowly, my mouth began to drop, as I realized it wasn't a love poem, but a story about a girl who killed herself by drowning in front of her little brother, because her parents had believed a story told about her by a boy in the area.  He had slandered her, evidently, and ruined her reputation, and her parents had thought the story was true.  By the time I got done transcribing, I was horrified!  It was quite a poem.  If you ever want it, let me know.  MYRA HERRON Tempus Fugit; Memento Mori  (Time Flies; Remember, you will Die.) 1. Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] SMITH, Nicol b. 1794
    2. thank you! Believe it or not, my SMITHs came from Shetland - a group of Islands off Scotland. Although there are a lot of Smiths in Shetland, the family managed to get back to my 3x Great Grandfather a James SMITH (such an unusual name, eh??). After much research and comparing notes, I found the parents of James, but am stuck there as so far no records have come to light. James had a brother William who had a son Nicol, etc. Actually both men named their lst born sons Nicol so the usual Scots naming paterns tend to add to confusion. It is William's Nicol who came to the U.S. at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. Traced him and his son Malcolm to Howard County, Iowa. Hoping to establish some contact with descendants of Nicol or Malcolm in the U.S. Have recently made contact with descendant from this Nicol's son that stayed in Scotland. He had a son who became a member of parliament and gained a "sir" title. Do you belong to the SMITH board or list?
