    1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Gravestones, 1700's vs. 1800's
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, Last year I had a little more time to visit little graveyards within an hour's drive of my home, and I took some pictures. I have some from Littleton, MA, which were taken in the autumn and turned out to be nice pictures. (one-time-use camera) I have found out that in MA in the 1600's, those gravestones would have long since disappeared. In the Boston to Lowell area, you would be very lucky to find a stone for someone from born 1700-1720. My KIDDER ancestor and his 2 brothers left Chelmsford, MA, and went to New Ipswich, NH, as it was being founded (late 1700's), and I've read that their gravestones are nowhere to be found. That doesn't seem right to me. The brother, Reuben KIDDER, was rich, a well-known man in the State, a large land-owner, etc., and I can't believe that there wasn't an important gravesite for him ! I'm told that in Billerica and Chelmsford (both founded 1655), many stones in "family plots" - meaning "on" the family's land, disappeared - one way or another. As more people came to the towns, more houses had to be built. Some graves would have been moved, but we can only guess what happened to others. In contrast, I've visited Gloucester, MA, and they have much more "old graveyards" than towns do near Lowell, MA. A good guess is that many of the gravestones were for fishermen and sailors, etc., because that's where they lived. But, why did those graveyards last much longer than ones "in land?" I've never had a chance to visit one of the old graveyards (hubby doesn't like to browse). But, in the fall, maybe I'll drive there myself and poke around. Regarding the stones, I read someplace that the reason why there were different kinds of stones - depending on which decade or year - was that the material used for the gravestones - was needed during "war time." So, people had to come up with other material to build the stones with. Was different kinds of material used in gravestones in Canada? Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) List Administrator P.S. There is a booklet which tells about the "Forefather's Burial Ground" in Chelmsford, MA. I drive by it often ! Oh, that reminds me, it is one of many, old graveyards in New England which were created on the grounds of a church. The above graveyard backs up to the historic church in Chelmsford Center. I've seen an old graveyard in Townsend, MA, which not only backs up to an historic church in the Center but some of the stones - lay against the church building.

    3. I've used sunlight and mirrors or very strong flashlights to cast shadows on old stones. It sometimes can help give you enough of an outline to see what's written. Looking through different colours of clear plastic at the stones can also help sometimes. Someday I'm going to try a laser level which produces a long straight line to see if that would help show up faint depressions. Moss growth here is the most common reason you can't read old stones. 1. [CAN-USA-MIG] SIMPSON, Charlotte E. b. abt 1851 N.Y to James SIMPSON &
    2. In 1860 U.S. Census Charlotte is living with her parents in La Prairie, Rock County, Wisconsin and is shown as 7 years old. There is an age discrepancy with birth shown on Family Search, but this is her and here her birth year is shown as 1853. In this census, she is shown as being born in Wisconsin so another discrepancy. Of course it is possible the lst Charlotte died and they had another daughter and gave her the same name - a Scottish custom. In the 1870 census, Charlotte is shown as 17 yrs old and believe the image showed she was born in New York. However, here the surname is spelled Simson. James SIMPSON death in Sept 1897 is shown on the Wisconsin Death Index but cannot find his nor his wife's Forbes (Forbice/Forbie) burials. I did check the burials in Rock County, Wisconsin. Charlotte's parents were both born in Shetland. Have Scotland info on the couple, but still looking for their marriage information. Possible it was an irregular marriage - believe they were Methodists but have yet to do a search on Shetland's People site. Does anyone have suggestions on how to find James & Forbes SIMPSON burials and Charlotte E. Simpson's burial and or marriage information. Cannot seem to find her on a census. Know that one of her Aunts moved to North Dakota and that her maternal grandparents lived, died and buried in Iowa. Any suggetions and help greatly appreciated. Lauraine

    2. Mary Lynn Fuller
    3. ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATES FOR IL ADOPTEES August 2009 ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATES FOR IL ADOPTEES is a monthly eNewsletter bringing you all the news that's fit to print from the Land of Lincoln. We are a voice for the Illinois Open Organization, www.ILOpen.org ILLINOIS OPEN MISSION STATEMENT It is the civil and human right of ALL ADOPTED ADULTS to have access to their original birth records unconditionally and free from falsification. Our goal is to challenge Illinois legislators to restore this civil and human right to all adopted men and women. We will not support legislation that places any restrictions on the rights of all adopted adults' access to their obc's. It is not our primary goal to be a search organization. We are independent of any other group. Important Facts In the Spring of 2008 the name Adoption Reform Illinois (ARI) was formed. Illinois Open was one of the organizations that was "tossed under their umbrella". This should never have happened and we have been quiet publicly about it until now. It has come to our attention that some people have found it to be confusing since Illinois Open did sign off on some letters sent by ARI to legilsators. Later an ARI press release was sent out regarding a Santa campaign. We are not part of ARI or Green Ribbon Campaign (GRC). We apologize for any confusion. Illinois Open is independent of any organization. We do not ask for nor do we receive donations. We have no membership fees. Please do not be mistaken in sending anyone money thinking that you are showing support for our organization. In fact, if anyone tries to tell you to send money to them in support of Illinois Open, please email us - obc@ilopen.org. Major Problem in IL House of Representatives What can we do about a state representative who is strongly opposed to adopted adults having access to their original birth certificate? We are not talking about the average politician. State Representative William B. Black (R) 104th District has been in office since 1986. He is the Deputy Republican Leader and has received many "Outstanding Legislator" awards. A reliable source has said that Representative Black's two children are adopted and a grandchild might be adopted. If any of you have seen him talk on the local news or heard him speak over the radio, you know that he is boisterous and will rant on and on regarding anything that he is opposed to. Needless to say someone who has been in office as long as he and has received so many "Outstanding Legislator" awards does have many followers. If that is not enough, chances are he does gain followers just because it is easier to agree with him than to hear him rant and rave. Whether Representative William Black will listen to anyone but his constituents could be questionable. But we must try to educate him since it is hard to say how much longer he might be in office. Perhaps we could stress the following: Adopted adults should have a civil right restored so they do have access to their original birth certificate, if they so desire. It should be unrestricted access, absolutely no conditions so no adopted adult is left behind. State Representative William B. Black 314 Capitol Building Springfield, IL 62706 217-782-4811 FAX: 217-782-1873 OR: State Representative William B. Black 7 E. Fairchild Danville, IL 61832 217-431-1986 FAX: 217-431-2088 How and Why Are Adoptees' Records Sealed? Original birth certificates have never been sealed to protect the privacy or confidentiality of the birth mother. The records were sealed to protect the new legal family unit created by the court – the adoptive family. Here is how it has always been done. 1. A birth mother signs irrevocable relinquishment documents after giving birth to her child and BEFORE ANY ADOPTION TAKES PLACE. The relinquishment documents are permanently & legally binding. At this time, the birthmother gives up all her legal rights to this child forever. 2. The child’s original birth certificate and adoption records are ordered sealed by a judge ONLY at the time that the judge signs a final adoption decree. 3. A court order to seal original birth documents is never made until the time of the finalization of the adoption. 4. Children who were not adopted, such as foster children, have full access to their original birth certificate. It is not impounded and sealed because they were never adopted.
