    2. Harriet Cady
    3. This came from Tom Dunn of the Hardwick Historical and since it had a couple of names I have recently seen on some website I thought I would copy to various ones.  I really love Tom's posting of Hardwick, VT history and all the facts that his cohort Lorraine Hussey researches with him and they write about. Harriet (QUINN) Cady, former Hardwick resident   Robie’s Mill   Soon after the turn of the century (1800), a Quaker by the name of Willard Bugbee, came to town on horseback from Connecticut with his wife and baby seated on the same horse behind him.  He decided to locate here and the first saw-mill and grist-mill were built here by Willard Bugbee, who also put in a carding machine.   Mark Goss bought and rebuilt the grist-mill about 1828. H. G. (Herman) Swerdfeger bought it in 1873.  In 1901, L. H. Pendleton owned it.  The Souvenir Edition of the Hardwick Gazette, dtd December 27th, 1900: “L.H. Pendelton bought the grist mill at this village of H.G. Swerdfeger and Son in November.  The grist mill is the oldest established business in Hardwick village.  He handles flour, feed of all kinds and staple groceries.  The mill is equipped with modern grinding machinery and does a large amount of custom grinding.  He employs two and sometimes three men.  He ships large quantities of feed to nearby towns, etc.” In September, 1903, Pendleton sold to L.S. Robie who owned it until his death in 1944.  Arthur Thompson was the next owner and he sold part of the land to Jerry Janicki who built a diner, now the Village restaurant.  Gerard Renaud was the last owner who operated a feed store there.  Waldo Bemis bought “the old eyesore” and had Clark Hastings demolish it in 1958.  While being torn down, six new horsewhips were found in the partitions.  Glen Slayton, who was watching the demolition, laughed and said he had shoved them down the partitions after his father, Herman Slayton, who had a store in the mill, had used one on him for being very late delivering a customer’s grocery order.  He was given one of the whips.   The site is now the village parking lot.   Source:  Anna Spaulding, Hardwick Gazette , Lorraine Hussey     Researched by Lorraine Hussey

    1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Message Boards
    2. Hi Betty: Was away again this past week so missed seeing this until last night. I belong to several message boards: NICHOL/NICOL, WHITTIER, ALBRIGHT, HIRD, etc. Usually get a post when something new is added and these are family names of interest to me. I also am on several lists particiating in this one most and contribute some to the Manitoba, Scots in Canada and Shetland lists. I think both lists and message boards are valuable. When first doing my ALBRECHT/ALBRIGHT family, joined the Quebec list. It was very helpful, but also very busy so unsubscribed once I got the information wanted. Still belong to the Simcoe list but opted to go digest mode. Miss Muriel Davidson, but the new administrator and group still offer lots of help. The trick to lists that are very busy is to only read the messages with subjects that are of interest or switch to digest mode. Have met cousins and made contacts on both lists and message boards. At times, a reply came a few years after my initial post too. Lauraine

    2. Hi Betty You are correct about these groups of children shipped to Canada. Their parents agreed to ship them to Canada to escape the blitz bombings in the UK and many were returned home after the war. 3. Hi again, I made a typo last night. It was August 1940 that the ship was torpedoed (but rescued). And, just a reminder that the "Child Migrant Scheme" was from 1860 to 1930's ! Over 100,000 children were "shipped to Canada." So, the children being shipped to Canada in the 1940's were because of World War II, and I think it was with the permission of the parents. Betty P.S. 3. Hi Cindy, Oh, don't start a discussion on EX's. :o) (just teasing) I have the same situation. I wanted to write up a family tree for my children, and I had heard their grandfather, in his later years, had written one up. But, EX and I were (and are) on terrible terms, and he and his father were "two peas in a pod." The father had given a copy to his 5 children. The only daughter was semi-orphaned when she 14. She was about to become a "Ward of the State" in Brooklyn, NY, and I "insisted" that she come live with us. (long story) So, she came to live in "this hick-town" in MA - very begrudgingly. So, I became her substitute mother for a while, and I helped to raise her children. After all the children became teens, she decided to start criticizing me, so we became estranged. Now? She won't give me a copy of her father's family-tree. I had a few names and I looked them up in the census pages. But, those 1940's are a tough time for researchers. 3. Hello, Someone has e-mailed me and asked me if I knew about the ship, SS Volendam, which has carrying hundreds of children from Great Britain to Canada in April 1940. I became curious so I'm in the process of looking it up. So far I'm finding a few sites which are interesting to read: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/34/a4297034.shtml http://www.learningcurve.gov.uk/homefront/evacuation/overseas/default.htm Several sites offer pictures of it, like this one: http://www.maltaconvoyaug42.freewebspace.com/myotherships.html The ship and another ship of the same month are mentioned in this book: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5400932 I just noticed in the first article (first URL) that the parents had been notified, and that some of the boys expressed a wish to get on another ship and continue their voyage to Canada. Did the children get to Canada? And, if they did, did they remain there or go back to their parents after the War? 3. Hi Faye, I did some investigating a few minutes ago and found out there is a Board for ... "Board Users." So, I posted a query about the "Page Tools." I found out that some Boards have the little "Page Tools" box where the Alerts and Favorites are mentioned, and some "Page Tools" box do not have them mentioned. So, I don't know why that is not consistent with all Boards. If I have time, I'll go find the page which list all the responsibilities of an Administrator of a Message Board. 3. Morning Betty The alert/favorites seems to have changed on Rootsweb boards- making a board a favorite or setting up an alert was there where it now says 'board information' or something like that. I tried starting a new thread on a board, and found the links to the favorites and alerts I'd already established and then when I went to a new board the options to make it a favorite or set up an alert were there in a box labeled 'board tools'. I don't understand why this has changed, or why 'they' are making it so difficult to find the links. Maybe with all the upgrades and changes they created their own glich! I hope someone knows an easier way, as this could be a real user deterent! faye ---- Betty <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> wrote: > Good morning, > > I also don't have time to check out all the Message Boards which would > probably be helpful to me. 3. Good morning, I also don't have time to check out all the Message Boards which would probably be helpful to me. I've know for a long time that there is a way to have some of the Boards become your "Favorites." But, I just haven't taken the time to do that procedure. Actually, I do try to remember to visit the KIDDER Board, and I just went there and tried to find the place where I can make it one of my "Favorites." It's not an obvious thing. I had to look around and found the instructions at the bottom of the page under "Board Help." You get a little box where you can click on "My Favorites." Or, you can click on "My Alerts." I just tried to do this, and it appears you have to use your own "Add a Favorite" tool. As far as "Alerts," go that is a little more difficult. The instruction says to use your own "Alerts" feature, but I'm not seeing that function on my "Outlook Express." Does anyone have more experience with Message Boards than I do? Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. This year I have discovered that, when you do Google searches, more postings to the Message Boards are showing up in the search. A good example of this happened yesterday. There are 2 books I've wanted to look at for a long time. When I Googled, "Yesterday's Naughty Children," yesterday, I found a posting on the subject from 6 years ago on the Lancashire, England, Message Board. It had information that I could use. That Message Board is one that I would never remember to visit. I did respond to the old posting, and discovered this morning - that the Board is "gatewayed" to the Lancsgen List. You very rarely see the Board postings on the List, so probably most people don't remember to visit it. I'm told that every Board which "is" gatewayed to a List has a note about it at the bottom of the page. I personally don't mind it when I post a query on a Board and then I post the same query on the List -- thus my query appears twice on the List. It's only a slight inconvenience to some. But, I know there is a lot of researchers who don't participate on the Lists and "only" participate on the Boards. So, I want those researchers to see my query. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cynthia Phillips" <cphillips59@gmail.com> To: <can-usa-migration@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 23, 2009 4:02 PM Subject: Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Message Board > tha'ts my problem if it doens't come to my email i don't remember and i'm > on so many boads and lists now id on't have time to flip thru them all > > I prefer they come to the emial lists. > > cindy >

    3. Hi again, Just a quick note to ask how many enjoy - finding cousins ! And, do you come from a large family and have many cousins, or do you come from a small family and only have a few cousins? Because KIDDER is my main research (along with spouses' surnames), and I've been learning about the families in Calais and Princeton, Maine, for over 15 years, I've found many descendants of them. Along the Maine / New Brunswick border there was Calvin KIDDER (1765-1799) and his only child, Joseph "Calvin" KIDDER (1799-1891) (aka Calvin KIDDER), so I'm always looking for more descendants of "the two Calvin's." In fact I just found another one last month. One son of Calvin (b1799) was Joseph KIDDER who was my gr-gr-grandfather. I have a few old photos of him - because his daughter-in-law in MA used to go up to visit him in Princeton, ME. But, I have no picture of Joe's wife, "Clara" KIDDER, or of any other member of the family. So, I wrote a letter to the Princeton Library and sent copies of a few photos. I asked if they had photos to share. Turned out? The Librarian was a KIDDER descendant ! :o) And, she actually went out and took a photo for me - of the KIDDER gravestone in the town. I've been wanting that for 15 years . :o) * When I find these descendants, I usually refer to them as "distant cousins" or "very distant cousins." I'll go find a "cousins' chart" and see what I should be calling them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin On quick look I'm not finding the "cousin chart" which I've found to be the easiest to look at. Maybe it's one of these: http://www.cyndislist.com/cousins.htm http://stellar-one.com/genealogy/cousins.htm That's all for this morning ! Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. How many have written up a "fan chart" ?? http://www.thetreemaker.com/samples/cousins-chart/family-genealogy-record.html P.S.2 One of my genealogy frustrations? 4-5 years ago a man e-mailed me and said he wanted to make up a "family tree" for his best friend. Once he had the information, he was going to write it up on a "chart" that could be put in a frame - and hung on the friend's wall. I had some basic information on my KERR and HENDERSON gr-gr-gr-grandparents in Argenteuil Co., Prov. of Quebec, and I told him some of what I knew. We corresponded for a few weeks, and then? I never heard from him again ! He had told me that he had some basic information himself, and, when he had a chart put together, he would send me a copy of it ! He didn't ! I also heard that some of my mother's cousins had done up a family-tree (related to the above man). And they won't "share." I saw one cousin at a few "wakes" and we discussed it. I was supposed to go visit her and never had the opportunity. And, then she passed. I wrote to her husband (2nd husband), and he said he would come visit me. But, he didn't say he would "share." I offered to meet him at his local library, and he didn't want to do that. So, sometimes - you can't "get" that information ! Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. I've been writing slow-mail letters to different KIDDER's near Calais, ME, for 15 years. And, they just wouldn't correspond with me ! A few years ago someone explained: The people in that area? "Won't even their mouth for their dentist !!"

    3. Hi again, Another comment I can make is: How many people try to get other people to - take up the hobby? I belong to a "town List" which is for the town where I grew up, and it is not for genealogy. However, some of the postings on the List are about the history of the town and the people who lived there in the 1800's and early 1900's. Since several of my early ancestors lived in Cambridge, MA, and West Cambridge, MA, I sometimes mention them. West Cambridge was a separate town which was renamed to Arlington, MA, in the late 1800's. And, parts of Woburn, MA, and Charlestown, MA, became a separate town, and it was renamed to Winchester, MA, in the late 1800's. The 2 towns shared a border and shared families. So, when my gr-gr-grandmother, Mrs. Adelaide Crosby (HUTCHINSON) RICE, and her older brother, George HUTCHINSON, sold their half of the large farm in 1890's, they probably just took their "horse and buggy" down the long hill into Arlington and lived there. * In fact, I just had a thought - yesterday! If they sold a nice farm in Winchester in 1890's, and didn't "owe" too much money because of the farm, they might have had enough money to buy a house in Arlington. I know where they lived and I've seen the houses on that small street. So, now I need to go to the Registry of Deeds to find out if George bought a house in 1890's. But, what I started to say is: When I post some of my little, genealogy stories on the "town List," once in a while someone e-mails "off-List" to say that they are intrigued by what I've been able to find out about my ancestors. And, they want to know "how" to start the hobby. First, I tell them, if they have some names and dates, go to the Library's web site and look in the census pages. But, as I told someone a few days ago, one thing you can do, IF you have exact names, go to the archives of the Message Boards and find out if anyone else is researching your ancestor !! And, then try the archives of the Lists !! It is a lot of fun to find "more" cousins ! Even if they are "very distant cousins" which is one of the labels I use. My sisters tell me we have "enough" cousins - we don't need any more ! But, I'm the "people person" among them ! * And, the step-cousins I mention occasionally is part of my paternal grandfather's story. He and my paternal grandmother "eloped" as teen-agers to VT ~1916, and they had 3 children. They "divorced" in 1935 and both remarried just a few months later. My grandmother had 2 more children with her 2nd husband. My grandfather never had more children. But, his 2nd wife had 4 children from her previous marriage - so he had 5** step-children then. She died fairly young and he remarried in 1952, and his 3rd wife had 4-5 children from her previous marriage. I was only a toddler when the first set of step-children were around, so I have no knowledge of them. But, I did find their daughters ! And "met" them a few years ago in Springfield, MA. I was a pre-teen in the 1950's, so I met the 2nd set of step-children. (I think I've told some of the stories about these "finds" in the past. In 2008, in the step-daughter's home from the 3rd marriage was a hope chest which had belonged to the wife from the 2nd marriage. I connected up the people involved, and the hope chest went from one step-cousin to the other. Inside? My grandfather's wallet !) I don't know if I've mentioned that I have one aunt surviving, and she had lost touch with her FRANCIS cousins from her father. Early this summer someone responded to one of my old postings on the Message Boards, and it was a daughter of one of my aunt's cousins ! I put them in touch with each other, and I believe they are now corresponding. They live about an hour and 15 minutes away from each other in MA, but my aunt is having some tough times this summer. This uncle and aunt, both named FRANCIS, had 7 children, and their oldest daughter has been fighting Cancer for a couple of years. She has not been doing well this year; and we hope we can still visit with her at our "cousins get-together" in November. Anyways, - post those queries - and "educated guesses" on the Message Boards ! Even 3 years from now - you never know "who" will find them and it will be someone you very much need to hear from. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) * I have a small theory: "People people" don't like to spend too much time at their computers. And, "computer people" don't like to spend too much time with people. :o) (my own thoughts) ** My grandfather's 2nd wife had a 1st marriage in New Brunswick and had a child from that. She told her children from her 2nd marriage that the son from the 1st marriage had drowned as a child. The step-cousins I found in Springfield, MA, had no knowledge of their grandmother's life. So, I offered to try to develop a family-tree for them. I did a little research and found out that 1st son had not died. Not only had he lived but he and his wife had moved to MA and didn't live too far from them. (I might have told this story on this List 2 years ago.)

    3. People persons?  I don't know what I am any more!  When I was close to my cousins, and JUST starting all this, I made an effort to find and meet the cousins.  I am terribly shy, but made myself do this, and wow, what a change that has made.  We're all in touch all the time, and I now write a newsletter for our extended family.  Both female cousins I met are contributors to the newsletter and when they were able, they did running research for me.  I had since moved from my home town in northern Michigan to Utah.  So, now, I'm a computer person, and find tons of information this way.  I still ask them questions, but because of my distance, I'm forced to be this way.  I'd LOVE to hit the library there again, and research all the information, but can't do it.  And neither of the ladies can make the efforts any more to do the running.  So, what do you call us, besides old fogies?  By the way, I send the newsletter to almost 100 addresses now, and because we're all the way across the states, including Alaska, there's NO way for a reunion!  MYRA HERRON Tempus Fugit; Memento Mori  (Time Flies; Remember, you will Die.) Let no one ever say of you, And say it to your shame, That all was always beauty here, that is, until you came. --- On Sun, 8/23/09, Betty <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> wrote: From: Betty <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> Subject: [CAN-USA-MIG] Interesting Points in Last Post (Cont'd.)
