    3. Before you can start looking you have to know where to look and for that you need to find this person in the census of 1861 1871 or 1881 for Canada and Ontario. In the census record is his address as a street address or as a rural township allocation of range and lot. The census will also tell you what municipality is located in and then if you are near by you can visit the municipal offices for the township and view their records for that property from transfer from Government to Private ownership either by land grant or purchase. I have not had much luck trying to find this information on line. There are researchers who will do this sort of lookup in many localities and generally the Canadian GenWeb series of web sites is pretty good at saying what is a available and where. http://ontariogenealogy.com/ is a good starting place. regards Garth At 03:34 PM 10/16/2008, you wrote: >My great grandfather with his family, migrated from England to Ontario in >1861. 3. You need to get the 1861 and 1871 census - the Agricultural portion. That gives you the exact land location for landowners (Conc and Lot # within a township and county). IT also provides neat details like acres owned, animals owned, type of home etc. You can get details how and where to get this census at http://allcensusrecords.com/ Choose CANADA and the 1861 and 1871 in turn. This is NOT the personal census you want, it is the AGRICULTURAL one. Once you have the exact location of your ancestors' land, you would then get the Abstract Indexes to Deeds for that exact location. That will give you the history of the land ownership from Crown Land days to present. For each index entry that pertains to your ancestor, you would then get the full land record. To learn more about this, how to do it, where to get those records, see http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/land.shtml Lorine On 10/16/08, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > My great grandfather with his family, migrated from England to Ontario in > 1861. 3. Karen I found some information here http://www.gov.ns.ca/NATR/library/histmaps.htm. There is a link to the Crown Lands Records for more information and if you have names and info for the specific people for whom you search and follow the link eventually, hopefully, you will get an email back from someone who will send you more exact information on the land's location. Then for a fee you can get copies of the actual grants... at least that worked for me... good luck faye ---- Karen <[email protected]> wrote: > can anyone tell me if there is online info for land grants in Nova Scotia? > Thanks in advance. > Karen > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Faye" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Thursday, October 16, 2008 12:31 PM > Subject: Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Land Grant Question: Those who migrated to Canada > during the War > > > > Mine appear to have headed to Nova Scotia in the 1770s more or less.. You may enter the subject as I have copied it in the "Subject" caption above. It may require a variety of entries with varying forms of your enquiry. The archives of that paper cover the entire country. Often times the news items are reported over days or months. The fees, if charged, are negligible. I traced a similar murder over a period of time and several inquiries and wound up with all of the facts from 1875 and a subsequent obituary. Good luck. Al

    3. Curiosity had me googling 1906 Murder of Catherine Stauffer. Didn't find anything that helpful to Linda, but came across this site which has some very interestesting free tidbits. One was talking about releasing money to the banks (1906!). Could have been current news. This site did come up with the google so there may be something on the murder, but couldn't find it readily. http://spiderbites.nytimes.com/free_1906/articles_1906_01_00003.html Lauraine

    3. Faye Land grants were offered to many, not just Loyalists. Depending on the regulations and circumstances, a settler might get a free grant of land or at a reduced rate. He might also be given a hardship grant, or be required to just pay the fees but nothing for the land. See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/land.shtml for more information on land records in Ontario (aka Canada West and Upper Canada) Lorine On 10/15/08, Faye <[email protected]> wrote: > Lorine - or anyone~ > > Were those late 1700s land grants offered only to the Loyalists or were they > offered to anyone? > > thanks > faye > descendant of several recipients of various grants > > ---- Olive Tree Genealogy <[email protected]> wrote: >> >> The first place you should look for a possible Loyalist >> ancestor is in the land records, for Loyalists and their >> families were granted land in accordance with their military >> rank and dependants. > > -- Olive Tree Genealogy http://olivetreegenealogy.com

    3. Hi Listers, Am hope that you folks might have a way to help me, not getting far on my own. I found a snippet of an article from a West Coast paper, reads as follows, from the Sacramento Bee, Saterday, 10, November 1906, pg 7. FORMER HUSBAND SUSPECTED OF MURDER..... news reaches Chico woman, of killing of her mother in Pennsylvinia and Son-in-Law is arrested. "CHICO(BUTTE Co.) November 10 - A telegram was recieved in this city yesterday from LAMBERTSVILLE,PA. , conveying the shocking information that Mrs. Satherine STAUFFER, an aged widow of the city, who has a daughter, Mrs. Sadie Berkebile, and 2 nephews, Joseph and James STAUFFER, residing in this city, was found dead, early yesterday morning, with a bullet hole in her head. The telegram also stated that an attempt was made to chloform the 2 grandchildren. The LAMBERTSVILLE police are of the opinion, that robbery was the probable cause of the murder, but the daughter, believes, although she will not confess it, that her divorced husband committed the deed for revenge. According to MRS. BERKEBILE, employed at present as an accountant on the CHICO Enterprise paper, she journeyed westward, 3000 miles, to escape the persecutions of the husband, who threatenedd on severral occassions to murder the whole family. She was married to BERKEBILE at the age of 16 years, and had 2 children by him. Shortly after the birth of the last child, he deserted her and ran away with the wife of HIS cousin. He soon tired of the new-found companion, however, and for the skae of the 2 children, she took up living with him again. The customary precautions were resumed again and in order to protect her life, she was compelled to sue for a divorce, which has been readily granted. BERKEBILE, still continues his abuses, however, and so she came to California to escape him. On several occassions he has threatened to kill her and the whole family. the end? Hoping that an obit can give forth a few names to hunt from... Again , i seek the obit for MRS. SATHERINE STAUFFER of Lambertsville, Pennsylvinia, date of 1906, November. or information of Berkebile<Husband> or daughter, Sadie Berkebile ~Linda~ Garden of Weedin'...Free weeds, you pick!
