Many regions of early Canada, and I assume the US, didn't have resident clergy yet. They depended on cirucit ministers who got to their area perhaps only a few times a year and with their arrival, marriages of a number of couples and baptisms, sometimes of a whole family, were performed. It wouldn't be unheard of for a family to travel to another area to have their child/children baptized rather than risk no baptism at all in a era when survival was uncertain.

Hi Barbara/Rose. My BROWNs were born Nova Scotia, too. I have identified two siblings: David BROWN b 1811 and My great, Mary Ann BROWN, b 1813. I do not know their parents, except that they were also born in Nova Scotia. Mary Ann/Marian married Eli SIMONS/SIMMONS/SIMMONDS/SYMONDS/SEAMANS/ETC before 1835. David BROWN married Nancy PETERSON before 1832. David lived for a while in Orleans, Jefferson County, New York and then migrated to Huron County, Michigan. Mary Ann first appears in Sanilac County, Michigan per her husband's land record in 1857. I wish I knew more of their earlier years and their parents' info. Donna Michigan

Hello Rose Staples: My gggrandfather was Henry Brown, b. 1829, Nova Scotia, and his father was James Brown. I was told by my great-aunt Grace Brown that as a child she & her siblings were told that "we should all be proud to be 'Halifax, Nova Scotia Browns'" because the Browns were loyal to the crown. It's been my mission for years to find my James Brown and then to find his father. My brother is part of the BROWN DNA study in hopes of finding a BROWN match. So far, no match. Our BROWNs were from the states of Maine & Vermont; went to Nova Scotia, and then in 1832, James & his family moved to Harwich, Ontario. I think Al can see from the responses that many of us would be interested in getting a look at the 'legislation' that he has. Is there a way to send it in the text of the email so that we can have it in the archives of the board? I'd also like to know where this came from, to see if there is other history there we can enjoy. Only the 'countries' knew that the borders meant something. Likely, like my ancestors, the borders were fairly meaningless. They just moved where they wanted, and only filled out papers when it was demanded of them. Mine just moved from Canada to Michigan and admitted to it in censuses.
