    2. Good morning Betty Did not respond. I do not believe it is a flaw. Been trying to get out of their clutches for quite some time. Nothing has worked. Their mail addressed to me still keeps coming. Never have I had a account w/them, nor do I want one. Then suddenly I received a letter from them w/this title: Confirm Your Reunion.com Account, Jeannie! This was my answer: Subj: Re: Confirm Your Reunion.com Account, Jeannie! Date: 10/16/2008 11:29:26 A.M. Pacific Standard Time From: _Jeannabee_ (mailto:Jeannabee) To: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) To my knowledge the first thing I saw at your site was a free look. Then later I found it was a pitch to pay money for the site. I wanted to verify the free at first but you had my e-address hooked in w/another sales pitch. So, I tried to use another of my screen names and found you apparently grabbed all of my screen names. Not happy w/this letter you sent because assumes that I did pay money which I did NOT. This is my warning any further mail from you will go immediately into my SPAM box. Jeannie Since the above letter have put about 6 or so of their ensuing letters into the AOL SPAM box. Eventually AOL will get rid of them. Last nite so disgusted after I saw the post on your list that I went to their web site to find a phone # for them. Posted below. Was too late to call them last night and too early this AM. But did use the hot link to E-mail my complaint. However to get to do that I found that you have to be a member, so dropped that idea. 3. Great point, Faye. And please note that the Dutch (and everyone else) changed calendars much earlier than the English did... I just found an Albany NY document which refers to 04 Sep 1682 "old style". Wikipedia has an article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_calendar Janet -------------- Original message from "faye rees" <[email protected]>: -------------- > I ran across this little tidbit while Googling something.. never knew this > before but now many old dates that I've seen suddenly make sense (a little > anyways) > > > > Please note that in colonial times (until 1752) the calendar year did not > change until March 25 (Feast of the Annunciation), therefore a date such as > March, 11 1683 (in its day) would be considered March 11, 1684 by standards > used today (new years day = Jan 1) - You may see some dates listed as March > 11, 1683/4. 2. Hi Marge: Thank you for the link for Washington. As a Canadian, my knowledge of American history was very dim - one of the reasons for subscribing to Massachusetts Moments. My knowledge of Eastern Canadian history is also rather limited and having ancestors who settled in Acadia, 1750 Nova Scotia as early 1700 American Colonies, am trying to improve my understanding of what went on. Slow process. Have book marked the Washington site. Have a cousin out there and will forward to her. 2. Hi Betty: Not sure how I forgot to attach the URL. Was sure I stuck it on, but was rushing. Have been away for a few days to Ontario for a family funeral and going away Tuesday for three days again. Retirement is supposed to be more layed back, etc. leaving more time for research. LOL. Tried to find the URL again, but don't think it was on Eastman - best I could come up with was: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cowcgs/WCMI/White_He.htm Hopefully, someone on the list can figure out how to get back to the lst page and post it? As you can see several Whittiers on it. My computer skills are still not clever enough to get back to the root of an URL. 3. I ran across this little tidbit while Googling something.. never knew this before but now many old dates that I've seen suddenly make sense (a little anyways) Please note that in colonial times (until 1752) the calendar year did not change until March 25 (Feast of the Annunciation), therefore a date such as March, 11 1683 (in its day) would be considered March 11, 1684 by standards used today (new years day = Jan 1) - You may see some dates listed as March 11, 1683/4. This shows both old and new style. Only dates between Jan 1 and Mar 25 and before 1752 are affected. Also in 1752, the date after Sept 2, 1752 became Sept 14, 1752.

    1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Old "Family BIBLES" which contain information
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, Just wanted to remind researchers that old "Family BIBLES" are a good source of information for some - if you are lucky enough to have one, find one, or find someone who has one that has information you need. And, many of them are being sold on-line. Some reasonably priced; some not. I can say that, when I first started researching my KIDDER line in Maine and MA about 15 years ago, I started writing a lot of slow-mail letters. One lady responded to say she was a niece of my great-grandfather from Princeton, ME. She lived in Portland, ME, and had her late mother's "Family BIBLE." She was kind enough to write to me with the data in the BIBLE, and from that I was able to find out more information about my great-grandfather's family. (He was born 1870 in Princeton.) Another lady responded to say that she and her husband had bought an old, abandoned farm in Maine, and way out in the back of the land were a few old gravestones - of KIDDER's. And KIDDER was written on one of the boards in the barn. (I had written to some Historical Societies in different parts of Maine. And, I used to write "letters to the Editors" of cities in Maine I was interested in.) I'd also like to mention that last week I saw the first-name, Ichabod, on one of the Lists, and that always reminds me of the fictional character - Ichabod CRANE. I went to find a web page which would remind me of the original story of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and was reminded of the Van TASSEL name. What did I just find being sold on-line? An old "family BIBLE" from the Tarrytown, NY, area, where one of the surnames mentioned was Van TASSEL. :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. I used to love watching the old, Disney movie every October: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Sleepy_Hollow Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names. And, please remember to check the on-line auctions for for your surnames and place-names.

    3. How interesting to read your mind's wanderings! It's this kind of research, though, that leads to places that are the best! I have one of our family's bibles, but not the other. I'd give a lot for that other one! That was my mother's side, and evidently, a careless cousin let it go. He lied about it later, but once they are gone, they are gone. We've never found where it actually went. There was an estate sale..... But once I read your musings on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, I thought I have to get that story for my 8 year old grandson! He has become very interested in reading, and that would be a perfect thing for a boy! 2. Betty
    3. Hi Lauraine, I just saw a news report on TV this week about how fishermen in Japan (?) are "getting away with murder" - because they continue to kill whales. They are giving the "excuse" that they need the whale carcasses for "research" and that is allowed. It's sort of off-topic for this List, but my husband's great-grandfather was reportedly a Whaler. He was Francisco MOURA from 1800's on the Azores (islands). There are books about the Azorean whalers - both adult and children's books. They traveled all over the world to catch whales. And just a reminder that the "Portuguese" were very important in the early history of the world. And, initially, Azoreans were coming to New England or Canada, and perhaps earlier the Hawaiian Islands and then California, etc. The Azores are beautiful, I'm told, but there weren't too many ways to make a living there. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) List Administrator FYI: I can't find out what happened to Francisco MOURA. But, I have my suspicions. His 2 daughters arrived in MA/US ~1905 at ~12 to become "indentured servants" in Boston. Their mother and youngest sister and 2 brothers arrived ~1910. I can find no mention of the father arriving in MA. There were MOURA families in Brooklyn, NY, around 1900, and I suspect that "Frank" MOURA went there - instead of to Cambridge, MA, where his wife and children went. (One son moved to Brooklyn after he married.) FYI: My (new) husband always believed that he was half-Portuguese and half-Irish. I just found out a few weeks ago that his grandmother was born in London, England, instead, and her father was born in Scotland. But, her mother might have been born in Ireland. (And, instead of being Annie McLAUGHLIN, she was Annie McLOUGHLIN, born in London. And she seems to have been one of 6 or 7 sisters.)
