    1. Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Smiths MaSmith
    2. Perhaps there is no relationship on the Smith side, still looking for Smiths in N. America in our family. Have some French background on my maternal side with the name Pouchard (Pochard/Pushaw) & Robichaux (Robichaud/Robeshaw,). Believe the Robichaux connection had ancestors who emigrated to Acadia when it was under French rule. There were no hints of the Palatine nor French connections by my parents or grandparents. Stumbled on this information, so one can't always believe what their ancestors tell them. Would never think of the name Smith as French? Still wondering about that. Where in France did they come from? People often fibbed about their ethnic background in earlier times to get work. People migration often resulted for land, work or political reasons. Growing up a Smith, learned early to defend its commonness with "there are only two kinds of people in the world, those that are Smiths, and those that wish they were". LOL. As the name suggests a connection to the metal trades, in earlier times, the Smiths probably made a decent living in most clans. 1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Lauraine / Smiths
    2. Wish that were true! Actually have a couple of collateral lines of Smith. My Grandma (Hird) Smith's sister married a Smith, but no relation to her husband. Have traced some of that family, but it seems the only son ended up on west coast of the U.S.A. Did find the granddaughter and we keep in track. Believe two or three of the daughters of G. Aunt Maggie's family ended up in the U.S. Slowly working on that. So if any of your Smith's have a Hird/Herd connection, could be a connection. 2. Know that my 3x G Grandfather Smith's nephew born in Shetland, moved to the U.S. Have not yet found when the family entered the U.S., but traced Nicol Smith & his son Malcolm Johnstone Smith to Iowa. Both are buried in Pleasant Hills Cemetery, in Lime Springs, Howard Cty, Iowa. There are a few more members of this family I am looking for so always scan through both Wisconsin & Iowa information. Today stumbled on this Iowa site and in one part has a fair amount of info on Norwegians: http://iagenweb.org/buenavista/ This was not where my relies settled, but had to look through to make sure none moved or married out of Howard County. One could spend hours in this site and unfortunately the part for Canada did not have an alphabet selection, so took a long time to get to the S names. Note that the names are clickible and there are small bios on some. Fascinating and hope someone finds one of their families on it.
