    1. Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Surnames from Scotland; people lived in Ireland

    3. Hi all: My late husband, from Brechin, Angus, Scot. taught me many years ago that Scots was the man/race, and Scotch was the drink. I have not heard of any change since...... You marry a Scotsman & drink Scotch. You don't marry a Scotchman & drink Scots. 3. Hi Freda This is what my research leads me to believe. The term Scotch Irish is made in America and is virtually unknown in Ireland, Scotland and the rest of the Commonwealth but as more North Americans go to Ireland searching their Ulster Scots roots it is now known to those working in the field of genealogy there. The term has wider meaning in America than the term Ulster Scots. Scotch Irish encompasses those who are of mixed heritage Scots and Irish heritage in addition to those of Protestant Scottish descent who migrated to Ulster in the 1600's and from Ireland to America in the 1800's to whom the term Ulster Scots refers and the mixing that has occurred in America away from the very strict Protestant Catholic separation of Ireland and in particular Ulster. The term Ulster Scots is used in Ireland and the United Kingdom to denote those of Protestant heritage from lowland Scotland and Northern England who came to Ireland in the Plantations of 1600-1675 and were imported by the English Crown to replace rebellious Irish Catholic Land Owners with those loyal to the Crown. The Catholics were stripped of their land and the government of the day handed to those arriving from Scotland. In some part this term and its history is kept alive by the Orange Order which so many joined after it's forming in County Armagh in 1795. This Protestant Fraternal Order was common here in the 1800's in Canada and while most of the first and second generation male members of my family were members, this tradition did not carry into generations 3 and was virtually non existent in my family in the 4th generation and is totally gone to-day, but the order is still alive and well in the Countries of the Commonwealth and USA. regards Garth At 11:02 PM 11/24/2008, you wrote: >Hi Garth - your opinion please on the term 'Scotch Irish'. 3. Hello All -- I received as a gift a wonderful 2-part series on DVD, "On Eagle's Wings" by John Anderson which you might consider, one part being "The Documentary" and the othrr part, "The Stage Show." It tells the story of the Scots-Irish -- from their beginnings in the Lowlands of Scotland in the late 1600s, their flight from persecution by the English, their arrival in Ireland, their difficulties there, and their journey to America in the 1700s, where they became the pioneers who opened up the frontier. The Documentary is wonderful, but the Stage Show is particularly interesting because it traces their music & song from Scotland to Ireland to early America to modern-day America. Wonderful! 3. I do love those shows.. and I watched one the other day about the year without summer - 1816 - and wondered if anyone on the list had found any referrence to it in family papers. It was the year following the erruption of Mt Tamboro in Indonesia that was so large that impacted the world's weather for the following year.. Europe, especially the area in and around Switzerland suffered lots of cold and rain - crops failed folks died of famine.. in Northeast North America temperatures dropped, snowed all year.. again crops failed.. On the show they showed someone tracing British ships' logs which referred to heavy winds, cold, etc even off the West African coast! anyone find any mentions in family records? Just curious... faye ---- MASmith <[email protected]> wrote: > Don't you just love those History Channel shows? 1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Veggies in Different Countries (O-T)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, For those in the U.S., may you all have a happy and fun Thanksgiving Day, or a peaceful and quiet one - whichever you prefer ! Because Lists are usually quiet during Holiday weeks, I thought I would mention a few veggies I just learned more about. The other day I took out one of my cookbooks and found a recipe for a special, mashed potato. It includes parsnip and rutabagga. Those are not veggies I usually cook, but my husband likes parsnips occasionally. It's a good thing that good supermarkets label their veggies and fruits, because I didn't remember what a rutabagga looked like. This morning I looked up that veggie and found it has an interesting history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutabaga#Preparation And earlier this week I made "turkey-a-la-king," which is often made -after- Thanksgiving. :o) But the recipe called for pimento, which is also not a veggie I use. In fact, I had to ask the manager at the supermarket where to find it. I just looked that up on-line, also, and found out it is a "cherry red pepper." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pimento And also found out it is a Portuguese word. My husband grew up with a grandmother making Portuguese soups. I've tried a couple, and they're not easy to make. I also tried making "Scotch Broth" once and that's not easy to make, either. So, I keep cans of it in the cabinet. (Because of genealogy, just last month I found out that my husband is not half-Portuguese / half-Irish, he is half-Portuguese / one-fourth Irish / one-fourth Scots/English.) :o) Are there other veggies that are more common in Canada than they are in the U.S.? Or, more common in one part of a country and not another ? I also stopped at an "apple orchard farm stand" yesterday to buy some "apple cider" for tomorrow. And they are still selling apples, and I saw some names of apples I haven't seen before. (I always liked the story of "Johnny Appleseed." I wonder what kind of apples he spread around the country. And, in history books, I think I remember reading that apples were some of the "staples" that the early immigrants would bring with them on the ships.) And pumpkins are a world-wide food item ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumpkin Check out the "Fiction" paragraph there. And, how many people have families and/or relatives who always want the -same- food on the table on holidays? And, how many try to provide -something different- on the table, and it is not appreciated ? One small thing which we -always- had on the table was "small boiled onions." I tried bringing them to the new in-law's Thanksgiving table last year, and they said, "What's that ??" Some tried it, and liked it. :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) List Administrator P.S. Learning about the Azores Islands I found out they are very big on -- veggies ! But they mostly put them in soup.

    3. I too have a line of Smiths which is interesting to try to find and sort out.. as well as being a part of that lovely group of Allens in Nova Scotia (how many Jeremiahs can one family have?).. We almost got into the whole wrong family, though, confusing my great grandfather George Morgan with another gentleman, also George Morgan (although with middle name Edward instead of Edwin) born a month earlier than he and in the same town! At first we attributed the 'ward instead of 'win to recording error until too many other things began not adding up.. but finding the right one led us back to a whole slew of Williams.. such a lovely tradition, naming children after parents and grandparents.. but what a tangle it left for us! happy hunting everyone.. and Happy Thanksgiving to all those South of the Border (but not down Mexico way) faye ---- MASmith <[email protected]> wrote: > OK. You asked about the Coast Guard in Canada - I don't know anything about that but those fishermen had their own rescue system in place.. Laborador Retrievers! My great uncle, who sailed and fished the Grand Banks in the 20s in a schooner out of Gloucester came home with a dog once.. ."found him swimming" was all he said about him.. but they were trained to go after anyone who fell or was washed overboard and they weren't supposed to return to the boat without the person! faye ---- Betty <[email protected]> wrote: > > Can anyone provide the history of the "Coast Guard" in Canada? > > > > Researchers should remember how many people were either conceived, or born, > during great blizzards ! Has anyone found any referrence to this phenomenon in their families' papers? It hit northeastern North America very hard with snow, temperatures far below normal and so on.. Northern Europe had terrible rains and both continents were hit with failing crops and famine. It would be interesting to know if there are any family records that speak to it. thanks faye

    3. Hi Lauraine, Where did Shirley KERR live? I had an e-mail from a KERR who lived in the same town as the long-standing KERR Farm in Lakefield or Lachute (Argenteuil). I wrote back and provided information, and she never wrote back a 2nd time. That was 4-5 years ago, and I don't remember her name. By the way, this year I have received e-mails from current neighbors of the KERR Farm. We corresponded several times during the summer and early fall. Back in Ireland, since no one knows about the families they left behind, we don't know if they had siblings or cousins who went off in different directions. (I saw a few of the sites where a HENDERSON tartan clothing item can be bought, but most were expensive items, and most sites were in Scotland. So, I would have to pay extra postage to get the item here in MA/US.) Thank you for your interest. And, thank you for all the ways you participate on this List. 1. [CAN-USA-MIG] "Blizzard of 1888"
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, This morning the "Mass Moments" daily e-mail is about the "Blizzard of 1888" which affected 2/3 of the East Coast of North America. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Blizzard_of_1888 The story is about the "Storm Warriors" who rescued sailors during that bad storm. That was the first group - which evolved into the "U.S. Coast Guard." http://www.massmoments.org/moment.cfm?mid=339 Can anyone provide the history of the "Coast Guard" in Canada? Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) FYI: Researchers should remember how many people were either conceived, or born, during great blizzards ! The above blizzard was sometimes called, "The Great White Hurricane." My grandfather was born 3 months after that Blizzard just outside of Boston, so, his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth (HANNAH) KERR, was pregnant during that Blizzard. And my grandmother was born almost a year later. I believe she was conceived during the "summer of 1888." She was the one who was reportedly a "foundling" in Boston. Her reported birth-date was Feb. 1, 1889, but she seems to have been "found" at Age 3 months on the steps of a church. Her Adoptive parents told her many "lies" when she lived with them from Ages 2 to 10, so we don't know what the truth is. (long, complicated story I've told on the Lists over the years) We may have arrived on different ships but we're all in the same boat now. :o) (possibly first said by Martin Luther King, Jr.)

    3. OK. Try "Smith." And to make matters worse, I not only married a Smith, but my mother's maiden name was SMITH. Two very separate and distinct family lines...and in different areas, as well. So, I do understand your plight!!! masmith -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dalle, Nancy, Civ, 126 CES, CEOR, 4878 Sent: Monday, November 24, 2008 8:09 AM To: '[email protected]' Subject: Re: [CAN-USA-MIG] Simple surnames My last name is West. My great Grandfather and Grandfather's names were Joseph. Do you know how many Joseph West there are in the world. This was one of my stumbling blocks. It still is, I've got my Great Grandfather's name - David West and I know he came from Scotland to Canada then to Michigan. But he is my end of this line unless I can find more about him. West is a very common name and searching for ancestors is like looking for a needle in a haystack...... 3. Hi Garth - your opinion please on the term 'Scotch Irish'. I've always understood that this is only used in the U.S., that the rest of us term ourselves Ulster Scots. Scotch still comes in a bottle. 1. [CAN-USA-MIG] Elizabeth (Porter) PHELPS - life in the 1700's
    2. This was in today's Mass Moments and the piece gives an idea how much work was involved in running a plantation or larger acreage in the 1700's. I am posting as think it is describes the life and labor of women very well. http://www.massmoments.org/moment.cfm?mid=338 Have yet to find any plantation owners among my ancestors, but definitely found some who lived on them in both Mass. & Maine plus my Mays who worked on the Livingston Plantation in New York.
