    3. This just appeared on my monitor from another list. The discovery of this reference was an accident. A reference to The ten volumes are an index to the Burlington (Vermont)Free Press from 1848 to 1870. And after that, and a note that there is a UVM Special Collections that has a card catalog index for the years from 1871-1895. Then, I there's a big gap in the index until 1950. Since 1985, the index has gone online. You can access this at the following URL: http://library.uvm.edu//articles/alpha.html, then go to "Vermont Newspaper Index." However, don't look for the obituaries, they don't seem to be there. While killing some time in the Bailey-Howe Library, at Vermont University, some reference material was stumbled on, published in 1940, Volume 1, WPA Work Index to the Burlington Free Press, Volume 1, 1848-1852, and then, another ten other volumes of the that same time period covering the period between 1848-1870. Each one of them had a similar format. The Subjects are indexed in alphabetical order with a section in the back, listing marriages and deaths also, published in the Free Press for the period 1848-1852, also in alphabetical order as well. Then, found ten MORE volumes were discovered covering this same 1848-1870 period. Each one of these volumes had the same format. What was discovered was that these books are known as the "Bailey Collection" and can be found at the University of Vermont University, held at the Special Collections department within the Bailey-Howe Library. A Ms. Sylvia Bugbee is head of this Special Collections at the university. To give you an example of those entries, here's a paraphrase of one of the book's entries: Thomas and Michael Duffy, sons of Mrs. Mary Duffy of Burlington, who landed in New York City from Liverpool 6-24-1848 to be found in 9:12:48 which is the date of the issue, and then it shows 2:2 which means page 2, column 2 for that issue. What a goldmine for someone searching in the northern counties! I appears that there are major news events from other parts of the Vermont state and sometimes the country, as well do appear, but the vital records are mostly Chittenden, Franklin Vermont. I thought that if anyone needed another source, this one would prove to be quite good.
