My Gr Gr grandparents, William & Sarah Ashby arrived in Canada in 1862. They came from Nuneaton in Warwicksire,England. Their 1st child, Mary Ann, my Gr grandmother, was born 14 Aug 1962, on Amherst Island. I am trying to find any information about their arrival in Canada. I am also interested in learning why the landed on Amherst Island. Was Kingston a port where ships landed at that time or would they have arrived at Quebec or Montreal and made their way to Kingston? Any information greatly appreciated. Regards, Jim.

Marj and I have extracted information from the Kingston Agent for the year 1862 and I see your Ashbys. http://www.theshipslist.com/1862/Kingstonnames1862.htm You can discount the spelling that says "Amhurst Island" as it is a transcription from handwritten records. Scroll to May 21st where they were assisted by the Kingston Agent. They arrived on the Culloden which sailed from Liverpool April 13th and arrived at Quebec May 14th. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/Canada1862.htm They would have taken train, stage or maybe river/lake steamer, or a combination, to Kingston, from Quebec.
