According to a family letter, they sailed from Bremen to Halifax when their son, Ernest Robert BOLLERT was two years old. He was born in Schleusingen, Suhl, Thuringia, Germany on 9 Jul 1850 . From Halifax , they traveled by train to Berlin, Ontario. Their next child was born in Berlin (Kitchener) in 1854. branches@widomaker.com http://www.widomaker.com/~branches/

    1. [CanShipsPre1865] Fuller surname
    2. My gr grandfather, William Henry FULLER was b. in 1840 in Avonport, Kings county, Nova Scotia. I have information that he had full sea merchants papers, and used to fish in his earlier days in and around Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, New Brunswick areas. I know this does not refer to passenger lists but am wondering if anyone has any information on this branch of the Fuller line. Wm. Henry was one of the sons of Edward M. Fuller who married Mary, unknown surname name..In the 1871 census of Kings county Edward was living with one of his sons Amos, in I believe Horton, or Lower Horton. This would put his birth around 1805.. Edwards' children, Wm. Henry, Amos and Celia Fuller were all b. in Avonport, Kings county NS. Later the male members of his family were listed as farmers. I know there were other branches of FULLER surname in Kings county(including the founder of Fuller Brushes) but I can't connect to any of the other branches. Sorry this was so long (It's my 1st post to this list) but I'm trying to investigate any possible connection to my FULLER line. I have all my FULLER line from William Henry FULLER right on down to the present generation. Roy Birthdays are good for you.. The more you have, the longer you live royf3@juno.com or rfuller76@yahoo.com. http://members.tripod.com/~fulroy/index.html

    2. Gladys Wilcox
    3. My paternal grandfather, Christopher CLEAR, immigrated from County Wexford, Ireland to Ontario Canada about 1847. He was born 1839 or 40. He died when I was very young, and there was never much said about him, except the Irish background. He did have an older brother, Patrick Joseph, b. 1820 .He settled in Toronto,Can., where he worked for a number of years boating on the Grand river,, after wards, to Lucan,Ontario where he took up farming .In 1858, he married Mary Ann Bennett at St Joseph's Catholic in Lucan, a son,Thomas was born in 1859, and he was married again in 1868 to Mary Owens., two more children, Mary and Patrick, were born,in Lucan.,before coming to Palo Alto Co., Iowa in 1873. My grandfather did not marry until 1875, in Iowa. Because of his tender age ,I have had more success locating the trail of Patrick, but what I would like to know is about parents and siblings. Did they come to America, or stay behind? The location, town or village in Ireland where they lived , point of entry to Canada and also port of embarkation in Ireland. My information has been found in , family Bible, obituaries, and more recently at Family Search, LDS. I realize this is long, but thought it might help to know what I do have on the family With many thanks, Gladys Clare Wilcox.

That means you need to give the list a date (even an estimated one!) when you think your family immigrated -- and to what part of Canada, if you want your query to have any chance of success. "Any information greatly appreciated" is far too general a statement for most of us to bother looking in our resources! What do you know? What do you want to know? Where have you looked (what records/sources)? Speaking for myself, I'm always glad to look in my resources to try to help other researchers, but only if enough details are given so that I'm not on a wild goose chase Lorine Lorine McGinnis Schulze The Olive Tree Genealogy http://OliveTreeGenealogy.com/ Past Voices:Letters Home http://pastvoices.com/ My Family Branches http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~myfamilybranches/ otg@csolve.net olivetreegen@netscape.net

    1. [CanShipsPre1865] John Major 1832-1888
    2. Ken Olson
    3. My 2nd Great Grandfather, John Major died on May 18, 1888 in Cairo Illinois. In his obituary it says that he was born at sea while his parents were traveling from France to Montreal. His tombstone says that he was 56 years, 3 days so that means that he was born on May 15, 1832. The obit continues to say that he was brought up Catholic, married and had two children. The children and wife subsequently died and in 1857 he moved to Cairo Illinois where he lived as a builder and wagon maker until he died. In 1869 he married again and had one daughter. Our family legend is that he was French and the census info shows him French born in Canada. However, the family legend said nothing about a first marriage or previous children so I guess the legend was incomplete. I suspect that Major is an anglicized version of whatever his birth name was. I have learned that Canadian ship records are pretty sparse in that time period and with no knowledge of exactly where his family lived or even what their name was, I don't have a good place to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    3. I am looking for my GGGrandfather William H. Barney who was listed in the 1861 census for Saulte Saint Marie, Ontario Canada, Algoma County. It listed him as Dane, and his occupation as Seaman. He married Julie C. Lefleur in 1849 in Saulte Saint Marie. They had four children. I cannot find out when he came to Canada, if he really was Dane. I cannot find any family, other than mine linking to him. Thank You Lucy Krajna

    1. [CanShipsPre1865] Part 2: Finding passengers before 1865
    2. Lorine McGinnis Schulze
    3. Because ships passenger lists are so scattered for Canadian arrivals before 1865, you should also consult ships passenger lists substitutes to try to find records of an ancestor's arrival. These substitutes include the following: - Census Records - try to narrow the time frame for your ancestor's arrival. Census records for Canada vary by Province so you will need to consult records specific to your Province of interest. See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/census.shtml for Ontario Census records. See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ for other provinces. - Tax Rolls - don't overlook these records to pinpoint an arrival year. Ontario's Tax & Assessment records began at various times for each County. They are discussed on my census pages at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/census.shtml - Newspaper Accounts - sometimes ship arrivals and/or passenger names were listed in local newspapers. Sometimes friends and family put in a "Looking for John Smith (or whoever) ...." requesting information on an immigrant. See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/npaper.shtml for details on what newspapers are available for the time period of interest to you. Also see The Ships List at http://www.theshipslist.com/ for newspaper accounts of voyages - Land Records - most immigrants purchased land soon after arrival. See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/clri.shtml for details on Ontario land records. For a link to a searchable database of New Brunswick land records from 1765 to 1900, go to http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/nb.shtml - City & Farmer's Directories - can pinpoint an ancestor's arrival. See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/dir.shtml for Ontario Directories For more details of what is available, where to find it, how to access the records, and for links to specific databases for these records, please see my article online on Immigration to Canada before 1865 at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/articles/immcanpre1865.shtml I am adding more information to this online article as I find it. The above suggestions are not meant as the definitive answer; I am quite sure there are more records that one can search, but this is all the info I have available at present. Of course if anyone can add to my list of available resources, I welcome input! The NAC also holds scattered records for the years 1732 and 1749 to 1760 for immigrants who sailed from France. There are some passenger lists which were kept by shipping agents in the originating country. A newspaper of the times will list ship arrivals but often only Cabin passengers are mentioned. There is some correspondence from the Kingston agent in the Archives of Ontario RG 11 collection. There is no index to this material and you may or may not find your people in the correspondence. If they required any kind of assistance from the agent the chances are good they will be mentioned. 3. You most certainly want to try the New York and Boston ships listings. Don't assume that they came in through Canada. So be sure to check all ships lists arriving about that time to North America. A good place to start is with NARA or the Family History Centers as they have all listing of ships arriving. 2. Dennis & Anita Lawrence
    3. I have looked at many on-line ships lists with no success in finding my ancestors. Noble J. Lawrence, my GGGrandfather immigrated to Ontario from Ireland with his parents and presumably his siblings about 1837. Noble would have been about 17 years old in 1837. His father's name was Joseph Lawrence. His mother's name is unknown. They initially settled in Little York. The Lawrence family is supposedly from Antrim. Noble married Mary Sarah Lyons, whose family was also from Ireland. The Lyons family immigrated to Ontario between 1830 - 1834. Mary's father was Joseph Lyons, married to Mary Gibson. Also part of the immigration was Mary Sarah's brother Joseph. The Lyons family was supposedly from the Dublin area, although Armagh has also been mentioned, and left Ireland via Newry. This is likely more information than required. But better more than not enough. Hopefully someone out there has the answers. Thanks Dennis Lawrence lawrend@shaw.ca
