Patricia, it seems your ship arrived prior to June 14th as we don't have it here on TheShipsList http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/ships1834.html Our 1834 arrivals cover mid-June to beginning-Sep. I did search the page 'match case' dal and didn't come up with a possible. Hopefully an earlier edition of the Montreal Gazette, or the Quebec Mercury will show your ship. To add a 'possible' spelling to your ship name, I see brig Annandale, Captain Craig, sailing from Dublin in 1835 http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/ships1835.html Sue --

Using the latter you can trace the certificate of service or competency held at Greenwich. The following information can be found on Charles John Renouf (NB only the first two and last two ships in the list below are Jersey-registered): Certificate of Service S52528. Born Jersey 1818. . 'Atrevida' 1856 (Mate) . 'St Helier' 23968 1857-8 (Master) . 'Francis Barclay' 7015 1861 (Mate) . 'Glasgow' 42721 1861 (Mate) . 'Red Coat' 4094 1861 (Master) . 'Red Coat' 1862 (Mate) . 'Fairlina' 45283 1868 (Mate) The numbers are the official ship numbers, which are needed to find crew lists during this period (when they are no longer archived alphabetically). This source also gives a rough indication of the ship's destination (e.g. North America) but is far from precise, and the Lloyds List should be used to find out the exact ports of call. The Guildhall Library (London) has all the Lloyds Captains Registers from circa 1855 to 1947. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Greenwich Maritime Museum and Library Greenwich is the source for certificates of service and competency for Masters and Mates (1850 onwards), as well as crew lists for 1861-2 and years ending in -5. Other books by the same author have been published by La Haule Books of Jersey, including "Tales of Jersey's Tall Ships" (with references to Capt. Jourdain Blampied), "Stories of Jersey's Ships" and "Ships and Railways". Sadly, Mr John Jean passed away on 30th July 1999. I happened to visit St Lawrence's church on the day of his funeral. La Haule have also republished "Jersey Sea Stories" by Philip Ahier. A more general book has been written by Roy McLoughlin under the title "The Sea was their Fortune" (Seaflower Books 1997). The latest book on the subject (published in 2001) is "From Sail to Steam" by Caroline Williams (Phillimore) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Genealogy in Britain's Channel Islands The Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey and assorted smaller isles) lie closer to France than England, but have been part of the United Kingdom for centuries. Their records share many similarities with their British counterparts, but their geography and history have had some peculiar effects on their people and their records. Fortunately, Alex Glendinning has done an excellent job of learning about the records of genealogical value available for those whose roots pass through the Channel Islands, and has shared his knowledge with us via the World Wide Web. His pages include in-depth information on such varied resources as parishes and their registers, records of the Jersey Merchant Seamen's Benefit Society, tombstone records, land transactions, wills, civil registration certificates, and heirlooms. He has also compiled an extensive set of links to other online resources, such as mailing lists and Channel Islands sections of the Family History Library Catalog. The result is a website of immense value to anyone with ancestry in the Channel Islands. 3. What I can share with you is this: Here is an Ontario Locator (below) and some information gathered concerning London, Ontario (which is presently in Middlesex County). But as to the Isle of Jersey, I for one, don't know the exact positioning of this place geographically, so I don't have a point of reference for it. Rhonda Houston http://www.geneofun.on.ca/ontariolocator/ http://www.geneofun.on.ca/ontariolocator/alpha-l.html London, London Township, Middlesex County (Currently Exists) Established 1791 as Georgina (formerly known as The Forks) by John Graves Simcoe as the site of the future provincial capital; Renamed London in 1825; Became a police village in 1840; Town in 1847; City in 1855 London City Jail Cemetery, London Township, Middlesex County (Cemetery) London District, (No Longer Exists) Established in 1798 it was declared a separate district in 1826 London East, London Township, Middlesex County (No Longer Exists) Established 1817 this village covered the North-East portion of the current city of London (Adelaide Street eastward) http://www.geneofun.on.ca/ontariolocator/alpha-m.html Middlesex County, (Currently Exists) Created by an Act of the Legislature of Upper Canada, Middlesex County was 'born' 1 Jan 1800, it was earlier known as Suffolk County; Named after Middlesex, England The London District Surrogate Court Registry (1800-1839) Although the records of this registry are on microfilm in the PAO, there is quite a story to be told. In 1846 a fire destroyed the files of the Registry Office in London back to 1839, and it was subsequently believed that, in fact, all the files back to 1800 had been burnt. However, the files for the period 1800-39 had never been lodged with the later ones (for resons too involved to explain now) and they were actually still in a Land Registry Office in Simcoe. There they stayed, neatly packed away in dusty old betal boxes, until 1972. In that year the moving of the office to another location led to a house-clearning operation and the files were discovered. They are now on microfilm in the D. B. Weldon Library in the University of Western Ontario, in London. There are also copies in the PAO, the Elgin County Libary, the London Public Library, and the Donly Museum in Simcoe. They can, of course, be borrowed though the inter-library loan system. In 1987, an alphabetical index was published inthe Ontarion Genealogical Society journal "Families", Vol.. 26 No. 4, as part of an article by Guy St. Denis, of the D. B. Weldon Library. Although it is very kind of you to offer the names of passengers on our list, I have concerns that not everyone will realize that it is not okay to take a list from an online website and post it here. I'm not suggesting you did that, just worried that it could happen. I've seen researchers copy a list from an online website and then post it to a mailing list - and that is not okay to do. In fact, it's not okay to take anything from any online website and post it on a Rootsweb mailing list. As Rootsweb's Acceptable Use Policy for mailing lists states - you must own the information you post, or must have permission from the author to post it. Again, Cathie I'm not suggesting you took this list from an online site, but this is a good opportunity for me to remind fellow subscribers of the rule. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html I also believe that it is far more valuable to have passenger lists posted online on a webpage for all to use, rather than posted on this, or any other mailing list. It only hits the list once, then is archived, and not many will find that archive. My suggestion is that if you have a list, don't post it on a mailing list. Offer it to an online website , then post the URL here when the passenger list is put online. That way the list has a better chance of being found by more researchers. Of course I'd like it if you (or others who have lists) chose Olive Tree Genealogy as the list's home, but that is entirely up to the individual :-) I am always looking for more passenger lists to add to Olive Tree's growing collection (hint, hint) Lorine Lorine McGinnis Schulze -- * The Olive Tree Genealogy http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Past Voices:Letters Home http://pastvoices.com/ * USA Genealogy http://www.geocities.com/usa_genealogy/ * My Family Branches http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~myfamilybranches/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegen@netscape.net

    1. [CanShipsPre1865] WPA index to the Burlington Free Press
    2. Rhonda Houston
    3. This just appeared on my monitor from another list. The discovery of this reference was an accident. A reference to The ten volumes are an index to the Burlington (Vermont)Free Press from 1848 to 1870. And after that, and a note that there is a UVM Special Collections that has a card catalog index for the years from 1871-1895. Then, I there's a big gap in the index until 1950. Since 1985, the index has gone online. You can access this at the following URL: http://library.uvm.edu//articles/alpha.html, then go to "Vermont Newspaper Index." However, don't look for the obituaries, they don't seem to be there. While killing some time in the Bailey-Howe Library, at Vermont University, some reference material was stumbled on, published in 1940, Volume 1, WPA Work Index to the Burlington Free Press, Volume 1, 1848-1852, and then, another ten other volumes of the that same time period covering the period between 1848-1870. Each one of them had a similar format. The Subjects are indexed in alphabetical order with a section in the back, listing marriages and deaths also, published in the Free Press for the period 1848-1852, also in alphabetical order as well. Then, found ten MORE volumes were discovered covering this same 1848-1870 period. Each one of these volumes had the same format. What was discovered was that these books are known as the "Bailey Collection" and can be found at the University of Vermont University, held at the Special Collections department within the Bailey-Howe Library. A Ms. Sylvia Bugbee is head of this Special Collections at the university. To give you an example of those entries, here's a paraphrase of one of the book's entries: Thomas and Michael Duffy, sons of Mrs. Mary Duffy of Burlington, who landed in New York City from Liverpool 6-24-1848 to be found in 9:12:48 which is the date of the issue, and then it shows 2:2 which means page 2, column 2 for that issue. What a goldmine for someone searching in the northern counties! I appears that there are major news events from other parts of the Vermont state and sometimes the country, as well do appear, but the vital records are mostly Chittenden, Franklin Vermont. I thought that if anyone needed another source, this one would prove to be quite good.
