Christi has given some very useful site URLs for research in early Upper Canada. You might also try http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/ for hints and research ideas for Upper Canada, as well as many Upper Canada and Ontario databases. For Irish ships to Canada you may want to try my new search engines at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/search_shipscanada.shtml >From these search engines you can search many (265 as of May 24/02) Internet passenger lists (free lists), including The Olive Tree Genealogy (my site) and many others. You can now also search the InGeneas databases both free and fee-based, from my site. This should make your search much easier. 3. GB, I had hit the famous "brick wall" with my grandmother's family. I couldn't figure out why they went to Canada before going to the US. Then I learned about the Peterborough migration. Although this sceme is probably too early for your Irish ancestors (most of the settlers came in 1820s from Cork), it is possible that a younger generation came out to follow their uncles & cousins. If your ancestors settled in "Upper Canada", what Ontario was called at the time, you might want to check out the Ontario GenWeb Site or search the Peter Robinson site. http://www.multiboard.com/~spettit/ongenweb/ Ontario GenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~onpeterb/probinsn.html Peter Robinson http://www.genealogy.org/~ajmorris/ireland/ireemg/ireemg11.htm The Ship "Elizabeth", one of the ships taking Irish to Canada in 1820's. 3. Has any one tried to trace family coming from Ireland in 1840, and been sucessful in finding what ship they came over on? I have not been able to do this and have no family stories, documents, etc., to give me a clue, except that they came from Ireland during the summer of 1840 and settled near Montreal. Thought perhaps others have been successful and would be able to give me some help. Thanks GB.

    2. Juana MacLeod
    3. Hello listers, I am grasping at straws here but figure anything is worth a shot. My 2nd great grandparents, Norman "Mor" MacLeod and Margaret MacLean are said to have come to Canada around 1825/26 from the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. They apparently came to St. Anns, Cape Breton at that time but I do not know whether or not that was their initial point of entry. I also do not know from what part of Lewis they hailed. With such vague information, I'm not expecting miracles but would hope to at least find out from where in Scotland ships would have sailed to Canada during this time period. Finding any ships that came to Cape Breton at this time would be a bonus. I know there was some documentation in existence regarding their passage over but as things often do, the papers disappeared (naturally, after the last person in the family who knew what was on them passed away). Any hints on where to look would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to find out where in Scotland my family came from. Oh, to have an uncommon surname! Thanks for any help. Kindest regards, Juana MacLeod

    3. Here's another search engine http://www.ingeneas.com/ingeneas/index.html The inGeneas Database contains passenger list records for immigrants arriving at Canadian ports between 1748 and 1873. For the most part, these records have been extracted from microfilm of the original manifests held at several archives and libraries. For each record produced by the search above, there is a description indicating the port/country of embarkation and disembarkation (whenever available) and what information the document in which the record appears typically contains. In general, all passenger records in this database contain place of embarkation and disembarkation, the name of the vessel and at least an approximate date. The specific information contained on passenger manifests varies widely. In some cases, the ship's purser efficiently recorded the name, age, occupation, former place of residence, religion and ethnic origin of each passenger. In other cases, only the basic information about the head of the family was recorded with the remaining family members recorded only by tally (as in 2 women, 4 children). In any case, the record description will tell you what kind of additional information you can expect for a given record. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------- 310422 STEWART ALEXANDER n/a 1847 Vital Statistic ALEXANDER STEWART Age: Not available Year: 1847 Price: $5.00US; $6.15Cdn.
