    3. Many thanks to Gwen Rawlings Barry for putting me on to the National Library and Archives of Canada, after enquiries to Lloyds Lists, the Merseyside Museum in Liverpool, Grosse Isle National Site and The Stewart Museum at The Fort Ile Sainte-Helene in Montreal to no avail, as no one had ever heard of the "Arundel". I contacted the National Library who gave me the film numbers to order from my local Library. They arrived in two small cartons! The first three were in french ( my eyes are still spinning) the second set was The Quebec Gazette. Right at the time the family Bible says they arrived there it was, but the ship had started out at Whitby not Liverpool, thats why it took six weeks not the usual four from Liverpool. Ther e was so much traffic in and out of Quebec it made me think of our Highway 401 and the Gazette faithfully records arrivals and departures and some passenger lists, unfortunately our ancestors were not "gentry" as they were not included in the passenger list. If anyone is at a dead end don't overlook the newspapers...... Patricia.......

George Augustus WESTPHAL who was being invalided home after suffering the effects of the climate while serving in the DEMERARA sloop. Lieut. WESTPHAL daily exercised the crew of HIGHLANDER at their guns until they were proficient in their use and, when the ship was attacked by the French ship privateer ALERT of 20 guns and 140 men, they asked him to take command during the action. For nearly three and a half hours the ALERT made ineffectual attempts to board and lost a great many killed and wounded. 3. By happy coincidence, I too had a GGGrandfather born in Ireland who retired from the army in Canada in 1847 and have already made a similar inquiry with great results. I heartily recommend the professional researcher who helped me, John Dagger of Dagger & Dagger, J.Dagger@btinternet.com. His rates are reasonable and his work is prompt. He found the ship my ancestor came on in 1826. ----- Original Message ----- From: "C Coogan" <ccoogan@yahoo.com> To: <CAN-SHIPSLISTS-PRE1865-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 17, 2002 7:38 AM Subject: [CanShipsPre1865] Military Transports to Canada > Fellow Researchers, > > Has anyone tried to identify ancestors through the > transport of British military troops to Canada? > > I have a GGGransfather born in Ireland who retired > from the Army in Canada in 1847 but can't tell when or > how he arrived? > > Any help would be appreciated. > > Charles C. > > ===== > Genealogy Surname Interests: > COOGAN/KOOGAN/ROBBINS/ARMSTRONG/VAN LOON/MACNAMARA > > __________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup > http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com > > > ==== CAN-SHIPSLISTS-PRE1865 Mailing List ==== > Read about immigration to Canada before 1865 at > http://olivetreegenealogy.com/articles/immcanpre1865.shtml > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

To enhance my search, I have started and EPWORTH Message Board at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/epworth/messages/1.html Still in the wake of my 'olde sea dog' G-grandfather with a tad more information but still having no luck at all finding mention of marine records for CHARLES (Skipper) EPWORTH (1846 - 1911) in the UK or Canada. This is what I have to date: William EPWORTH b.abt 1820 and Mary (c/b Leathwaite) b.abt 1825, 1 known child. While he was away at sea he carved ships for his 7 sons. Some were models and others were pictures. One of the ''pictures" has been berthed in 'our slip'. She is, frame and all, carved in 3 dimensions from a single piece of pine, about 3' x 2' x 5". See her at: http://liverpool-1825.tripod.com/GGship.JPG We know of 2 more "pictures" that are still in the family and am waiting for photos of same. They are all different ships he sailed on and all have a different harbour painted in background.
