For example The Hawke collection spans the years from 1831 until 1892 and includes letterbooks of Hawke and his successor, J.A. Donaldson, registers of immigrants who came to the attention of the emigrant office, financial records, and two reports of inspection of child immigrants. It is held at the Ontario Archives. I have microfilm numbers for some very specific immigration schemes to Canada in my article listed above. As well there are some shipping company records held in Ireland, for example those of the J&J Cooke Shipping Agency. Records of passengers can be found in D.2892/1/1-14 Passenger Books of J & J Cooke, Shipping Agents. Sailings from Londonderry to Philadelphia, Quebec, St. John, New Brunswick, 1847-71 (see also MIC.13) in the PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE of NORTHERN IRELAND I have some of the ships from the J&J Cooke records online on Olive Tree - see Irish Ships at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/irish_index.shtml or Ships to Canada at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tocanp01.shtml Lorine Lorine Lorine McGinnis Schulze -- * The Olive Tree Genealogy http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Past Voices:Letters Home http://pastvoices.com/ * USA Genealogy http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/ * My Family Branches http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~myfamilybranches/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegen@netscape.net

    3. The following article is from a New Brunswick site and refers to The Demerest on which my great grandfather was a passenger. There doesn't appear to be any available information regarding the 23 passengers and crew who were rescued, nor do I find this ship listed anywhere. Query: - If The Demerest was destined for NY, but passengers arrived in NB - where would one look for records and/or information? Would passengers from Demerest be included with the Falcon's? All help would be greatly appreciated. Doreen ARTICLE: An entry in The Ships List, 1847 states: "From Lloyd's List - May 14, 1847: 'From New York, April 20th - The Demerest, Captain Dunker, from Sligo to New York was abandoned 21st ult. in a sinking state in lat 43, long. 39. Crew and passengers saved." >From St. John, NB: "The Falcon, Captain Whyttecombe arrived from Limerick on April 13th, 1847." >From New Brunswick Courier, Saturday, April 17th, 1847: "Tuesday: The Barque Falcon, Captain Whyttecombe, Limerick, 45, owner John Robertson, entered in ballast. On the 21st March fell in with the wreck on the brig Demerest, Captain Bourke from Sligo to New York in a sinking state, having on the morning of the 19th at 2 a.m., lat. 42.57 long. 39.30W while under close reefed topsails, during a sudden hurrican, been hove upon her beam ends the main mast going by the board and carrying away her pumps, and the foremast breaking in three pieces - once below the deck - the stern post also being started and the vessel leaking fast. About noon on the 19th got clear of the wreck of the masts which until that time had been striking the vessel very heavily so as to cause her to make a great quantity of water, rigged the jibbom for a jurymast, but finding the vessel unmanageable and in a sinking state, the rudder being adrift, the master and the crew resolved to abandon her and with the passengers, in all 23 in number, were taken on board the Falcon. The Falcon cleared St. John on May 4th for Bristol with timber and deals."

    1. [CanShipsPre1865] Finding an Ancestor in Land Records to Narrow Immigration Year (Was Re: Passenger Lists)

Dear Jim You don't say where in Simcoe County this family settled, so I can't help with specifics but I did take a look in some land records, namely the CLRI. (Computerized Land Records Index). Land records are very useful. Originally all land in Ontario belonged to the Crown. Although there were small areas of settlement in 1763 after the British took over, major settlement of Upper Canada began in 1783 and utilized Crown Grants. The CLRI is an index which summarizes land grants from sales of of Crown Land in Ontario, from Canada Company sales and leases, and from Peter Robinson settlers' grants. It provides invaluable clues for further research! Given the early settlement time period, there is a very good chance your James will be found there. Most settlers bought land soon after arrival, although of course there were exceptions to this - some lived with family previously settled, others had no urgent need for land (a blacksmith didn't need land as urgently as a farmer for example) Getting back to the CLRI, it only shows the first time owner of Crown Land so if your ancestor purchased land from someone else his/her name will not show on this index but it is still a very useful tool. Not only does it provide you with exact location (township, lot #, conc. #) it provides you with a date of transaction, whether or not there were special circumstances surrounding the transaction (a free grant, a hardship grant, a military grant, etc), and it provides you with an Archival Reference number. This AR number can provide more detail; often it does not but it is still a stone that should be turned. With a date of transaction you have narrowed the field for immigration. :-) Beyond that the value of the CLRI is in the interpretation of the one line index entry -- which can lead you to other avenues of research. I have a more detailed explanation of the CLRI and other land records in Ontario on my site under my ONTARIO RESEARCH section. Go to http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/land.shtml and http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/clri.shtml Now - back to your James Patton! I had a look in the CLRI and found several references to James Patton settling in various townships in Simcoe County. There were too many to copy here but let me give you one as an example of what you will learn. If you can give me a township or town/village where James settled, I'll see if one of the many I found could be yours. For instance I found reference to James Patton purchasing land in Orillia in 1857; Kempenfelt in 1856; 3 entries for Innisfil 1853 and 1854 and 2 entries for Tay in 1853 and 1854. Here is one of the Tay entries so you can see how the CLRI works and how you interpret it: First, the fields of entry are: Name of Locatee/ Residence/ Township, Town or City/ Lot/ Concession/ Date ID/ Issue Date/ Transaction Type/. Type FG/ Type of Lease or Sale/ Archival Reference James Patton/ -- / Tay / 19/ 3 / 4/ 18530318/ L / -- /--/ CCB3034497 Translation: James Patton, no residence given, leased land on Conc. 3, Lot 19 in Tay Township Simcoe County on 18 March 1853. This was a Canada Company transaction and more information can be found in the Canada Company fonds at the Ontario Archives, specifically in Volume 34 on page 497 You will therefore want to consult Canada Company Sale & Lease files 1780-1920 (F 129, on MS 729, 8 reels) Since it was a Canada Company transaction you should also consult their Applications for Deeds 1827-1949 (Series B-3), Registers of Wills 1826- 1920, Power of Attorney files 1826-1926 (Series A-7-1), Burial Certificates 1842-1923 and their Remittance Books (Series C-7, Vols. 1-4) listing overseas names and addresses to whom money was sent. Go to my pages at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/clri.shtml Read my information on the CLRI and where to get the next set of records. Then use the conversion tables I have linked to, to provide you with an exact microfilm reel number(s). Once you have the exact land location for your ancestor (lot, conc #, township and county) you can venture into more records such as the Abstract Indexes to Deeds and Township papers, which can contain a wealth of genealogical treasure! However since this list is really for immigration, I won't get into that as it's a bit too far off topic :-) Please let me know if you have details re your James Patton. I live in Simcoe County and would be happy to check a few sources for you. 3. Hi all: This is my first posting to this list. I am trying to locate the port and arrival vessel for my g/g/granparents and their family. The information I have comes from the 1901 Canadian Census and is as follows: Charles and Emma HUNTLEY with between 3 and 5 children in tow. They emigrated from Trowbridge, Wiltshire in southwest England in either 1855 or 1856, depending on who is more accurate, the father or the eldest daughter. If there is no way to track them down from Canada's point of view is there corresponding documentation from England covering the period in question? Thanks for listening, Dan Huntley researching HUNTLEY; WALKER - England DALY; HICKEY; O'CONNELL - Ireland --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 2. July 2 I have ggrandparents who came form Ireland with six children circa. At a Genealogy meeting this weekend I was advised they more than likely came from Liverpool I am able to trace only one of those children but more important I have gone through many lists of ships with no success. I have to guess they arrived circa 1837-49. That is a guess from the age of a grandson who became one of your Senators. His mother was one of the children. Any help or direction anyone can give will be most welcome. I might be able to check out some item at the NY State Genealogy Library in the Capital of NYState, Albany. Thank you. GYager

Believe other DUKELOW came at same time but not sure, possibly even earlier. Initially they settle in the Ogdensburg P.Q./Prescott area of Ontario. Do not know which port they landed at. I believe the spelling DUCKLOW was given to this branch of the family by misspelling by a port official and it stuck!! So on ship's list the spelling could have been DUKELOW or DUCKLOW. 2. Hello Researchers, Can I post my interest: I am searching for the Chipperfield family who left Suffolk 1829 - 1833. Two brothers: John Chipperfield, born 1800. with a new wife (Lydia Girdlestone) . I do not know if there were any children born of this marriage. George Mark Chipperfield born 1810. By 1837 both brothers were landholders in Ontario; George married Catherine Rindress in Ontario 1833. I am hoping to find their names and the ships name; I had expected that they would have left from one of the East Coast ports: Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Ipswich - but have found nothing yet. Can you help please? Gordon Smith in Norfolk, England.
