Peter Charland PORTSMOUTH - Peter P. Charland, Jr., 76, formerly of Clover Lane, Portsmouth, died at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton on Nov. 6, 2004. He was born in Franklin on Oct. 24, 1928, the son of Peter P. and Anna (Dineen) Charland, Sr. He attended schools in Franklin and graduated from Franklin High School with the Class of 1944. Following graduation, he served with The U.S. Marine Corps. from 1945 until 1948. He attained the rank of corporal. Following his discharge, he attended The Franklin Institute in Boston where he learned his trade of electrician. In 1951, he entered the U.S. Air Force where he served until 1971. During his service years, he attained several awards and attained the rank of master sergeant. After his military service, he owned and operated his own business, Charland Electric Co. in Portsmouth for several years. Several years ago, while in Franklin, he was a member of The Franklin Fire Department, and The Franklin Lodge of Elks 1280. He was also a Fourth Degree Member of The Knights of Columbus, a member of Franklin VFW Post 1698, former Franklin Moose Club and Franklin American Legion. He was a communicant of St. James Church in Portsmouth. His wife, Mrs. Claire (Bergeron) Charland, died in 1994. Family members include his five children, Ramona Charland-Brighton and her husband, Mark Brighton, of Portsmouth, Carmen Gordon and her husband, Richard Gordon, of Greenland, Peter P. Charland III of Clinton, Mass., Monica J. Williams of Greenland, and William J. Charland of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Peter Gordon, Michael Gordon, Tylor Williams, and Benjamin Brighton; and several nieces and nephews. ---- There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 9:30 a.m. in St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Burial services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Cemetery, Franklin, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mr. Charland may be made to The Salvation Army or to The NH Veterans Home, 139 Winter St., Tilton, NH 03276.
