Fortier, 95, of New Milford, husband of Mary Stankus Fortier, died Friday, October 15, 1999, at the Candlewood Valley Health Center. e was born July 5, 1904, in Vergennes, Vermont, a son of the late Frank and Mae Beardsley Fortier. Mr. Fortier attended schools in Vermont and Maine, and took up residence in Waterbury in 1924, where he held occupations as salesman, millworker and groundskeeper. He was an active member of the Wigwam and Chase Gun Clubs for more than 30 years. He won numerous awards and certificates of merit for marksmanship and assisted in the training of the State National Guard during World War II, for which he received several citations. Besides his wife of 72 years, he is survived by two sons, Olin F. Fortier of Florida and John A. Fortier of Mississippi; two daughters, Mary F. Araya and Helen I Connors, both of New Milford; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews in Vermont and Rhode Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 18, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lakes Church, New Milford, with Father Tom Ptaszynski officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford. Friends may call Sunday, October 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday, October 18, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, CT. She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Olin B. Fortier, and a son, Olin F. Fortier, of Florida. Her parents were the late Vincas and Veronica Juozaitis Stankus of Waterbury. Mrs. Fortier is survived by two sisters, Josephine Hotchkiss, of Portland, Ore.; and Vera S. Puzas, of Waterbury; a brother, Joseph Stankus, of Watertown; two daughters, Mary Araya and Helen Connors, both of New Milford; a son, John A. Fortier, of Greenville, Miss.; twenty one grandchildren, thirty two great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fortier was an active member of St. Josephs Parish, in Waterbury, for many years. She was a member of the choir, President of the Altar Society, a foundress of the Apostleship of Prayer in the parish, a promoter of the Passionist Retreat Group, a member of the Knights of Lithuania, Chapter 7, and an officer in the Moteru Sanjunga (Lithuanian Womens Alliance). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10 a.m., at Our Lady of the Lakes Chapel, New Milford, with Father Fred Langlois, Pastor, officiating.
