    1. [CAN-QC-OBITS] HAKINS, William & Hannah [Simpson]
    2. Judy
    3. Hello. I am looking for information on William (12 Apr 1785-20 Sep 1847) and Hannah Hakins (3 May 1786-c.11 Dec 1816), and their children, George (5 Jul 1806-22 Sep 1896) and 2-5 others. The information I have is from a book written by a now deceased, shirt-tail relation with no sources noted. She says: "Fleeing the illness & hard times of England, the Hakins', among the first family ancestors to take up a life in North America, left from Hull, England in the fall of 1816 & emigrated to Montreal. Wm had originally booked to cross the Atlantic in a fair-sized sailing ship, then changed his mind & cancelled, later learning that it had gone down with all aboard lost. Finally crossed in "an oldish one, on her last trip for passengers". Probably took 30-40+ days w/many storms. Scudded at 14 knots an hour, (16 mph). When arriving @ the "channel" they had to wait 2-3 days for a pilot to guide them. Went from Father Point @ St Lawrence Rvr, to Tadoussac to Montreal. 1st in Quebec where Wm's 1st wife, Hannah Simpson Hakins, died, merely 6 weeks after arriving from England; then to South Hero, Vermont and St. Lawrence, New York"--info in "Sooner or Later" by Virginia Stumbough. I have been trying to find just when and on what ship they travelled from England to Canada and just where Hannah died and was buried, supposedly in Montreal. I have had someone help me find the first ship they were probably booked on but changed plans--The Trafalgar, in 1817, though the name is spelled HAKENS and the year a bit later than in the book. We will be in Ottawa in April 2007. Can someone give me suggestions as to where I might find records on this family and their arrival in Canada as well as Hannah's death while we are in Ottawa and Montreal? It seems that they may have lived with or near a cousin of William's in Montreal (name unknown) and then when William remarried, they moved to South Hero, Vermont (found in the 1830 Census). Their exact movement between Montreal, South Hero and St. Lawrence, New York is uncertain and varied. Is there any records of obituaries or news articles or the like for that time period that my have a clue to Hannah's death and burial? Any help anyone can give me in finding more information will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.
