"Sis" Bergevin Lifetime Carson Valley resident, Lillian L. "Sis" Bergevin, passed away at the age of 83 at Tahoe Pacific Hospital Meadows in Reno on Sunday, June 6, 2004. She was born in Gardnerville, NV on January 28, 1921 to Seth and Hazel Coyan Bergevin. Sis would spend the first five years of life living in Markleeville, CA, in the winters and at Blue Lakes, CA in the summers. These early days are most likely where Sis developed her love for the outdoors and her interest in hiking and fishing. The family moved down out of the mountains and for the next five years, Sis attended school in Minden, NV. After the fifth grade, Seth and Hazel decided to buy a hotel in Gardnerville that they named Seth's Hotel (it later became known as the Pyrenees' Hotel and remains today as the Aladdin Flower Shop). The family resided at the hotel and Sis began sixth grade at Gardnerville Elementary. She continued through school and graduated from Douglas High School in 1938 with 24 other students. After graduation, Sis received permission from the Douglas High School principal to take some post graduate classes at the high school. For the remainder of 1938 and the first half of 1939, Sis attended classes and worked in the bookkeeping department at the Minden Butter Company. Sis attended Sacramento Junior College by working two jobs to pay her way. After graduation she moved home to again work at the Minden Butter Company. When that job ended she went to work for the C.O.D. Garage as a bookkeeper. With the outbreak of World War II, Sis's parents moved to Hawthorne, NV. Sis followed in 1943 due to her father's poor health. After his sudden death, Sis stayed to care for her mother as both of her brothers were away in the army. Sis took a job in the bank as a window teller. In 1946, the city of Hawthorne incorporated and Sis was asked to be the city clerk. She left her job at the bank and became Hawthorne's first city clerk. Sis eventually moved back to Minden where she applied for a job with the state of Nevada. She got a job with the health division where she worked for the next 30 plus years, eventually working her way up to the position of Administrative Health Services Officer, where she administered everything except medical services. She was in charge of all personnel except doctors and dentists and she was responsible for putting the public health programs in front of both the governor and the legislature. Sis was appointed to serve on the State Group Insurance committee on June 24, 1967, by then Gov. Paul Laxalt. She served on the committee until 1986. Her job was to establish insurance benefits and regulations for all State of Nevada employees. In 2002, Sis moved to Merrill Gardens and was grateful to have such a wonderful home in which to spend this segment of her life. Sis was active in the Gardnerville Literary Club, Western Nevada Cowbelles and numerous bridge clubs. Most of all, she enjoyed her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Seth and Hazel Bergevin; and her brothers, Donald W. Bergevin (Maris) and Louis W. Bergevin. She is survived by her nieces, Linda Critchfield (Larry) of Jackson, CA, Marilyn Knigge (Steve) of Ione, CA, Jeanne Russell (Todd) of Carson City; and her nephews, Keith W. Bergevin (Melanie) of Rocklin, CA, Lee W. Bergevin (Sharon) of Sparks; along with several great nieces and great nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Luetta Bergevin. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 21, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Carson Valley Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville, NV. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Douglas County Public Library-Gift Fund, Att., Sandy Draper, 1625 Library Lane, Minden, NV, 89423, or the East Fork Gallery, 1503 US Hwy. 395 N., Gardnerville, NV 89410. Sis felt that these two entities enhanced the community and gave her many hours of pleasure.
