Monday, November 22, 2004 Edgard J. Violette 1914-2004 AUGUSTA -- Edgard J. Violette, 90, of Northern Avenue escaped the bonds his body had recently placed on him and passed quietly away on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Mr. Violette was born on April 1, 1914, in Drummond, New Brunswick, the son of the late Edmond and Therese (St. Amand) Violette. The family returned to the United States in 1923. He attended St. Augustine's parish school and, much to his pleasure, received his certificate of completion in 1999. He had previously received his General Educational Development diploma from Cony High School. He began his work career at 16 at Bates Manufacturing Co., Edwards Division, where he remained until he entered the Army in January 1941. He was in the 103rd Infantry Division and served with distinction and bravery in the South Pacific and was awarded two bronze stars with clusters. Through an Army buddy, he met Dorothy Bertrand, who would become his bride on June 23, 1945. He served the community as a police officer and as an Augusta city councilor; he briefly owned a tavern and was a lineman for Central Maine Power Co. before beginning his career with the Veterans Administration center at Togus, from which he retired after nearly 30 years of service. He was respected by his co-workers and appreciated by those for whom he cared. He was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church; an honorary life member of Le Club Calumet; an honorary life member of Abnaki Council 334, Knights of Columbus; a member of the Assumption Society, St. John the Baptist Union of America; a member of St. Paul's Cursillistas; and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He became a grandfather in 1983 with the arrival of Zachary Joseph Violette, who quickly became the apple of his eye. Edgard was the last of his family. He was predeceased by brothers Augustine, Aurele, Anthony, Claude, Rudolph and Maurice; and sisters Rose (infant), Nellie Grondin, Addie Lemieux Wentworth, Anita Clavette and Jeanette Betit. Edgard is survived by his bride of 59 years, Dorothy (Bertrand) Violette; his son, Richard "Rick" and his wife, Linda (Hinkley) Violette, and their son, Zachary; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him and called him friend. Friends may visit 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
