Laurent O. Patenaude WATERVILLE - The Rev. Laurent 0. Patenaude, 79, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at his residence, Mount St. Joseph in Waterville, after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta on Feb. 22, 1918, the son of Wilfred and Lucie (Gilbert) Patenaude. He went to St. Augustine School in Augusta then studied at St. Charles Seminary in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, and St. Augustine Seminary in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Father Patenaude was ordained into the priesthood in Portland on June 19, 1943, by Bishop McCarthy. He was first assigned as curate to St. Andre Catholic Church in Biddeford and then to St.Joseph Catholic Church in Old Town, St. Mary«s Catholic Church in Lewiston and St. John Catholic Church in Rumford. Father Patenaude was named administrator of St. John Catholic Church, Aroostook, pastor of St. Mary Star-of-the-Sea in Stonington, St. Mary Catholic Church at Eagle Lake, Holy Family Catholic Church in Greenville and St. Louis Catholic Church in Auburn. He retired from St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Waterville because of ill health. Father Patenaude moved to Fort Myers, Fla., where he was an assistant at the Parish of the Resurrection. While he was there, he helped on weekends, said daily parish Masses and visited the sick parishioners at two hospitals every week for 15 years. During the summer, Father Patenaude had a place on Cobbossee Lake and assisted weekends in Oakland and Belgrade. Father Patenaude was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Patenaude, a Sister with the Good Shepherd Order. He leaves to mourn him, five brothers, Fr. Gerard Patenaude, Fr. Gilbert Patenaude, Irenee Patenaude and his wife Madeline, Dr. Robert Patenaude and his wife, Alice and Dr. Raymond Patenaude and his wife, Monique, all of Augusta; three sisters, Cecile and her husband, Oscar Morin of Augusta, Therese and her husband, Donald Rodrigue of Jefferson and Julia and her husband, Alberic Fontaine of Augusta; many nephews, nieces and other relatives. Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Father Patenaude will be received at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta, Thursday at 3:00 p.m. by the Rev. Clement Thibodeau and will lie in state at the church from 3-5 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta, with Bishop Joseph Gerry, officiating. Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta. Patenaude service AUGUSTA - A Concelebrated Mass of Christian burial for Rev. Laurent Patenaude, who died Feb. 16, 1998, was celebrated Friday morning, Feb. 20, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with His Excellency Joseph Gerry, Bishop of the Diocese of Portland, officiating. He was assisted by Most Rev. Michael Cote, Auxiliary Bishop of Portland, Rev. Gilbert Patenaude, brother of the deceased, Rev. Gerard Patenaude, brother of the deceased, Rev. Lionel Chouinard, pastor of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Rev. Robert Martel, Rev. Roger Ouellette and Rev. Robert Proulx. Also present were many priests from the Diocese of Portland. Altar servers were: great-niece Venessa Fontaine, great-nephew Abram Patenaude along with Roger Tondreau and Romeo Roy. Organist was Lucille Cloutier and soloists were Dr. Raymond Patenaude, brother of the deceased along with Armand Beaulieu and Gerry Thibodeau. Ushers were Louise Patenaude, Richard Tardiff, Wilfred Fontaine, Patrick Dunn, Todd Patenaude and Johanne Patenaude. The first reading was given by nephew Charles Fontaine and the second reading was given by nephew Dominic Patenaude. The Offertory Gifts were presented by sisters of the deceased: Cecile Morin, Theresa Rodrigue and Julia Fontaine. There were representatives from St. Augustine Church, Diocese of Portland, Sisters and staff of Mount St. Joseph of Waterville, Knights of Columbus, Kennebec Savings Bank, Calumet Club, Frank Pomerleau, Inc., Pine State Trading Co., Letter Systems, Belgrade Insurance & Real Estate, Honorary bearers, from the Calumet Club, were: president Arthur Bonenfant, vice-president O«Neil Boivin, and past presidents Norman R. Veilleux, Raymond Chouinard and Jean Paul Fortin. Pallbearers were: Charles Patenaude, Steve Rodrigue, Robert Patenaude Jr., George Patenaude, Mark Fontaine and Timothy Clifford. The Color Guard was provided by the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus from Michael J. McGivney Assembly of Gardiner, Cannabas Assembly of Hallowell and Abnaki Assembly of Augusta. The Reception of the Body and Liturgy of the Hours was held Thursday afternoon, Feb. 19, at St. Augustine Church with Rev. Clement Thibodeau, Dean, and pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Gardiner, officiating. Cantor was Fr. Patenaude«s brother, Dr. Raymond Patenaude and organist was Lucille Cloutier. Ushers were Madeline Patenaude, Alice Patenaude and Monique Patenaude. Pallbearers were Thomas Patenaude, Donald Rodrigue, Charles Fontaine, Richard Tardiff, Robert Patenaude Sr. and Irenee Patenaude. Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Augusta.
