Bernard L. Gelinas Bernard L. Gelinas 1933 - 2004 SOUTH HADLEY - Bernard L. Gelinas, 71, of Pearl St., died Tuesday, November 14, 2004 at his home in West Palm Beach, Florida. Born in South Hadley, son of the late Leon and Laura (Dubuc) Gelinas. Bernie graduated from South Hadley High School in 1953 and Vaughan Barber School, Hartford, CT in 1956. He was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, South Hadley and served on the Parish Council. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during Korea. While in the service he received the National Defense Service Medal. He was the owner of Bernie's Barber Shop, South Hadley for 30 years. Since 1971 to present Bernie was the Assessor for South Hadley and Longmeadow. He was a member of the Hampden and Hampshire County Assessor Association. Bernie was signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1954 as a pitcher and played in the Texas League. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4044, Fairview section of Chicopee and a 4th Degree #1670 Arch Bishop Williams Assembly, an avid sports fan, member of the Egg and I Golf League, and also was a coach for Little League in South Hadley. Bernie was predeceased by his wife, June (Heberle) Gelinas, in 2003; and his sister, Theresa Wailgum, in 2001.He is survived by his son, Bernie Gelinas and his wife Michele of South Hadley; his daughter, Rosemarie McLaughlin and her husband Michael of Holyoke; his sister, Shirley Avery of West Palm Beach, Florida; his brother-in-law, Fr. Frederick Heberle. He also has many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Monday morning 9 a.m. from the Ryder Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Church with burial in St. Rose Cemetery, all in South Hadley.
