VICTOR G. MATHIEU - Providence 01:00 AM EST on Thursday, November 18, 2004 VICTOR G. MATHIEU, 83, of the Village at Elmhurst, 700 Smith St., a retired production controller, a former Central Falls councilman and champion of the Lithuanian-American community, died Tuesday at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of A. Beatrice (Savickis) Mathieu; they had been married for 60 years. Born in Central Falls, a son of the late Louis and Cora (Fournier) Mathieu, he had lived in Central Falls for 30 years, and Bristol for 33 years, before moving to Providence 11 months ago. Mr. Mathieu had been a production controller and customer-service representative at Conyer Insulated Wire Co. in Lincoln for 44 years, until retiring in 1992. He had also worked at the former Premier Thread Co., in Bristol. In 1948, Mr. Mathieu was elected to the Central Falls City Council, from the 4th Ward; he served for seven years. He also had been a doorkeeper at the Rhode Island State House. He was a charter member of the Conyer Credit Union, where he had been a member of the board and had served as president for 18 years. He was also a past president of the former Cumberland Credit Union, now Marquette Credit Union, where he continued to serve on the board of directors. Mr. Mathieu was a member of the Knights of Lithuania, Council 103, and the American Lithuanian Citizens Beneficial Club, and had helped to establish a department of Lithuanian studies at the University of Illinois. At the Knights of Lithuania's national convention in 1988, he was honored with the organization's Distinguished Member Award, for his efforts on behalf of the Lithuanian community. He was a life member of Le Foyer, in Pawtucket, and a past president of the Le Foyer Toastmasters Club. Mr. Mathieu was a communicant of St. Casimir Church. He was a former communicant of St. Mary Church, in Bristol, and St. Matthew Church, in Central Falls, where he was a member and officer of the Union St. Jean-Baptiste, Council 428. Besides his wife, he leaves several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The funeral will be held Saturday at 8:45 a.m. from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith St., with a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Casimir Church, Smith Street. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
