    3. Carmel Melanson November 19, 2004 PROCTORSVILLE - Carmel Melanson, 91, died peacefully in his sleep at the Gill Home in Ludlow Monday evening, November 15, 2004. He was born and brought up in St. Francis, Maine, the son of Charles and Elise (Jandreau). He became a logger at a young age which became a career which spanned more than 70 years. That career was interrupted during World War II. He was an expert welder who helped build destroyers at the Bath (Maine) Ironworks shipyard. He and his family moved to Vermont in 1946. He was a foreman for the International Pulp and Paper Company. He built and managed a lumber camp on Terrible Mountain in Weston. He established a reputation as an honest, hardworking logger who had a deep respect for nature. He was forced into "an early" retirement by health problems at age 86. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rolande "Roly" (Brunelle). She devoted herself to his care during his declining years. He is survived also by three children, Carmen (Citro), Claude and Rene. Rene is also a logger and he was instrumental in extending his father's career. Also surviving are six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family is grateful to the people at the Gill Home for their compassion and caring. We also wish to thank Dr. Mitchell Miller. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Gill Home or the Holy Name of Mary Church. Calling hours will be Friday, Nov. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Holy Name of Mary parish hall in Proctorsville. A funeral service will be held at that church on Saturday at 11 a.m. Internment will be private at the family's convenience.
