He was born the son of Julian and Dorothy Walker Sawyer on Jan. 29, 1931 in Auburn. He attended Portland schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1948. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. He also later graduated from Bliss Business School. On Feb. 1, 1958, he married Jeannine Francoeur, of Lewiston. Together they raised five children. For 32 years they lived in Cumberland Center and he was involved with the Lions Club. He enjoyed outdoor work at his home, fishing and being with family, especially his grandchildren. Lee worked for most of his life as a salesman and retired from A.B. Dick in December 2000. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine, of 46 years; children, Karen Thurlow and her fiance Jeff Kinder of South Portland, David Sawyer of Fayette, Gregory Sawyer of Yarmouth, Beth Stees and her husband William of Falmouth, and Laura Lee Sawyer (his 'Pumpkin') of Portland; and his grandchildren, Eric Thurlow, Kelly and Courtney Sawyer and Alexander and Christopher Stees. He is also survived by two children of a previous marriage, Thomas Sawyer of Readfield, Mass, and Brenda Sawyer of Gardiner. Thomas has two children, Christopher and Emily Sawyer. At the request of Lee, there will be no visiting hours. There will be a Celebration of his Life at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Route 88, Falmouth, on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004 at 4 p.m. The family wishes that donations be made to Maine Lung Association or Maine Cancer Society in his name, in lieu of flowers. They also desire that all cigarette smokers attempt to observe the Great American Smoke Out this Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004. Arrangements are by Dignified Cremation and Funeral Services.
