L’abbé Jules Simard est né à Métabetchouan, Lac-St-Jean, le 25 mai 1919, de Mme Marie Lavoie et de M. Ludger Simard. Il a fait ses études classiques à Ste-Anne de Beaupré (1934-1935) et à Montréal (1946-1949). Au terme de ses études théologiques au Grand Séminaire de Chicoutimi (1949-1953), il a été ordonné prêtre, le 30 mai 1953, dans la Cathédrale de Chicoutimi. A titre de vicaire, il a collaboré au ministère dans les paroisses de Christ-Roi à Chicoutimi (1953-1954), Sainte-Croix de Lac-à-la-Croix (1955-1956) et Sainte-Famille de Kénogami (1956). Il a assumé des responsabilités dans les trois Séminaires du diocèse de Chicoutimi, soit au Grand Séminaire de Chicoutimi (1958-1961), au Petit Séminaire de Chicoutimi (1954-1955) et au Séminaire Marie-Reine-du Clergé (1957-1958 et 1971-1981). Il a été aumônier des Servantes du Très –Saint-Sacrement de Chicoutimi et, en même temps, aumônier de la Garde d’Honneur (1981-1983); par la suite, il a fait fonction de confesseur adjoint des religieuses Augustines à Chicoutimi (1987-1999). Il a apporté sa collaboration à la Commission diocésaine de liturgie ainsi qu'au Comité diocésain de musique sacrée (1971-1981), collaboration d’autant plus appréciée que l’abbé Simard avait été étudiant en orgue à l'École de musique de l’Université Laval de Québec, d'abord comme laïque (lauréat en orgue, 1942), puis plus tard comme prêtre (1967-1970), où il obtint le baccalauréat en musique (B.M.). Il fut membre de la Corporation La Revue liturgique de 1977 à 1980. Il a été de plus aumônier de la «Légion de Marie» (1963-1967) et directeur diocésain du mouvement d’apostolat de la prière «Prière et Vie» de 1977 à 1979. Il s’est impliqué dans l’oeuvre de l'éducation à titre d'aumônier à l’École secondaire Laure Conan de Chicoutimi (1962-1967) et comme aumônier à temps partiel à la pastorale scolaire pour la Commission scolaire régionale Lac-St-Jean, à St-Gédéon (1971-1972). Retraité depuis janvier 1985, il élit domicile d'abord à la Résidence Mgr Paré chez les Soeurs Antoniennes de Marie, à Chicoutimi (1985-1999) et depuis à la Résidence Mgr Victor Tremblay où il est décédé. (1918-2000) - 1947 (+) Journal: LE SOLEIL 2000-3-25 SIMARD Père Benoît, c.s.v. 1918-2000 Au centre Champagneur de Joliette, le 23 mars 2000, à l'âge de 81 ans, est décédé le père Benoît Simard, clerc de Saint-Viateur. Il était dans la 57e année de sa profession religieuse et la 53e année de sa vie sacerdotale. Originaire de Sainte-Marie de Beauce, il entra au noviciat de Rigaud en 1942 et fut ordonné prêtre en 1947. Il exerça son ministère à différents endroits: Sully, Val d'Espoir, Sainte-Luce-sur-Mer, Matane, Rivière-du-Loup et Saint-Elzéar. Depuis juillet 1982, il était retiré au centre Champagneur de Joliette. Outre sa famille religieuse, il laisse dans le deuil ses soeurs: Mary Simard (Wilfrid Bonneville), Éliane Simard (Marcel Labrecque); ses frères: Gabriel (Hélène Gagné) et Luc, ainsi que des neveux et nièces. Le père Simard sera exposé à la Résidence Saint-Viateur 132, Saint-Charles N. Joliette le dimanche 26 mars de 14h à 16h30 et de 19h à 21h. Une célébration de la Parole aura lieu à 19h30. Ses funérailles seront célébrées au même endroit le lundi 27 mars à 14h. L'inhumation suivra au cimetière de la congrégration à Joliette.

À Ste-Anne de Beaupré, le 14 avril, est décédé le père André Simard, rédemptoriste. Né le 9 novembre 1921 à Baie St-Paul, de Amédée Simard et de Marie Boily, le père Simard est entré chez les rédemptoristes en juillet 1942 et a prononcé les vœux l’année suivante. Il a été ordonné prêtre à Aylmer, le 26 juin 1949. Puis il revint au Juvénat pour enseigner les mathématiques pendant neuf ans. En 1959, il fut nommé vicaire à la paroisse Notre-Dame-du-Perpétuel-Secours de Timmins. L’année suivante, en 1960, il est invité par la Province rédemptoriste à fonder une paroisse à Hamilton, dans le but de regrouper les Canadiens-Français dispersés dans la ville. Il fait construire l’église et plus tard, une école primaire. En 1967, il est nommé à la paroisse française de Georgetown où il entreprend la construction d’une salle paroissiale. En 1974, il passe une année d’études à l’Université Laval et va passer une année comme vicaire à Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix de Moncton. En 1976, il est rappelé à Ste-Anne de Beaupré pour prendre en charge la direction de l’Auberge de la Basilique dont il assure la gérance jusqu’en 1992. Ensuite, il passe quelques années comme aumônier du Centre d’Accueil de St-Tite, puis devient collaborateur dans l’organisation du pèlerinage dans la région d’Ottawa pendant une dizaine d’années. Le père Simard laisse le souvenir d’un homme fort accueillant, habile organisateur de communautés, ami des pauvres et entièrement dévoué à l’œuvre du pèlerinage. Il laisse dans le deuil ses deux frères : Jean-Paul et Étienne ainsi que la communauté des rédemptoristes. La dépouille mortelle sera exposée le mardi 15 avril, de 16h à 21h au Monastère des rédemptoristes 10 018, av. Il a fait ses études classiques au Petit Séminaire de Chicoutimi (1927-1934) et ses études théologiques au Grand Séminaire du même endroit (1934-1938), il a été ordonné prêtre dans l'église de Saint-Coeur-de-Marie, Lac-Saint-Jean, le 15 mai 1938. Il a consacré les premières années de son ministère à l'oeuvre de l'enseignement de l'éducation et de la culture physique au Petit Séminaire de Chicoutimi (1938-1945) puis à l'Ecole d'agriculture de Chicoutimi (1945-1946). Affecté au ministère en paroisse, il fut successivement vicaire à Sainte-Famille de Kénogami (1946-1947), Saint-Louis de Chambord (1947) et Sainte-Thérèse d'Avila de Dolbeau (1947). Au cours des onze années suivantes, il s'est dévoué auprès des jeunes du milieu ouvrier et surtout du milieu étudiant. Il a fait d'abord fonction (1948) d'adjoint de l'aumônier diocésain de la Jeunesse ouvrière catholique (J.O.C.) et de la Jeunesse étudiante catholique (J.E.C.); puis c'est à titre d'aumônier diocésain que de 1948 à 1959, il a exercé son ministère auprès du mouvement de la Jeunesse étudiante catholique masculine et féminine (J.E.C et J.E.C.F.) et qu'en 1949 il a fondé le VILLAGE ETUDIANT au Lac-Pouce, Laterrière; par surcroît, encore au bénéfice des jeunes, il a accepté la charge de directeur diocésain de la Croisade eucharistique (1952-1959). Il a ensuite été visiteur ecclésiastique des écoles urbaines du diocèse de Chicoutimi (1959-1962) puis aumônier des Frères Maristes d'Alma et des étudiants des écoles Champagnat et Saint-Joseph d'Alma (1962-1963). Après son ministère paroissial à Sainte-Hedwidge de Roberval (avril-juillet 1963), il a été astreint à un congé de maladie (1963-1964). Il a ensuite accepté les charges d'aumônier du nouveau collège du Bon-Pasteur, avenue Lafontaine, Chicoutimi (1964-1965), d'aumônier diocésain des Messagères de Notre-Dame (1964-1965), de professeur-aumônier à l'Institut de technologie de Jonquière (1965-1966) puis, après un peu de repos, aumônier à ce même institut (1967-1968). Bien qu'au repos à partir de juin 1968 et officiellement à la retraite depuis 1979, M. l'abbé Alfred Simard, compte tenu de son état de santé et de ses possibilités, s'est adonné à divers ministères, collaborations et travaux personnels de recherches, spécialement en généalogie en regard surtout des familles du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. A partir de 1968, il a continué son ministère en paroisse et en des lieux de villégiature, ce qu'il faisait depuis 1965. Il a assuré une messe à l'Ermitage des Soeurs Notre-Dame du Bon-Conseil à Laterrière à l'été 1976. De 1980 à 1994, il a apporté sa collaboration au ministère fait au Centre-Dieu du Centre commercial de Place du Royaume à Chicoutimi. Après avoir vécu plusieurs années à la Résidence des prêtres de l'avenue Georges-Vanier à Chicoutimi, il a quitté les lieux pour aller terminer son existence à la Résidence Mgr Paré, chez les Soeurs Antoniennes de Marie de la rue Jacques-Cartier à Chicoutimi. Ceux et celles qui le désirent, peuvent faire un don pour la reconstruction du "Chalet Alfred Simard" du Lac Pouce, incendié en décembre dernier. Born in Canada, she was a daughter of the late Etienne and Anna (Chenard) Levesque. Miss Levesque had been an assembler for many years at both Calart Flowers, Providence, and Garland Industries, Coventry. She leaves a sister, Cecile M. Joyal of Coventry; a brother, Rene J. Levesque of West Warwick; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Annette M. and Robert Levesque. The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from R. KOLLETT SR., 75, of Canfield Avenue, a retired supervisor and machine operator, died Thursday at Kent Hospital. He was the husband of the late Arlene N. (Oatley) Kollett. Born in Providence, a son of the late Charles R. and Charlotte (Reid) Kollett, he had been a Warwick resident for 50 years. Mr. Kollett had been a supervisor and machine operator at Handy & Harman, Improved Seamless Wire, Improved Laminated Metals, and Krementz and Co. for 30 years before retiring. A life member of the Warwick Lodge of Elks, he had served on several committees and helped with charitable functions. He was a member of the Oakland Beach Volunteer Fire Company, and coached the Warwick American Little League. Mr. Kollett was an avid sports fan and enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors. He leaves two sons, Albert E. Kollett Jr. and Charles H. Kollett, both of Warwick; two brothers, Frederick J. Kollett of Warwick and Philip Kollett of Pawtucket; two sisters, Frances Dori of West Warwick and Alice J. Labossiere of Warwick; and two grandsons. He was the brother of the late Carl Labossiere and Edward R. Kollett. The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Chapel, 2435 Warwick Ave. Burial will be in Pawtuxet Memorial Park.

(CLEMENT) FORTIN, 95, of Borden Street, a homemaker, died yesterday at Nicholas House, Fairhaven, Mass. She was the wife of the late Eli Fortin. Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Alphonse and Emma (Prattaboire) Clement, she lived in Fall River all her life. She was a parishioner of Notre Dame Church, and a member of the Borden Seniors Association. She leaves a son, Romeo A. Fortin of Westport; a brother, Leo Clement of Somerset; two sisters, Claire Bouchard of Buena Park, Calif., and Rita Petrosso of Swansea; and a granddaughter, four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Normand, Hector, Henry and Arthur Clement, Germaine Sabatino, Flora McClendon, Reina Fortin, Bertha Gosselin, Annette Gagnon and Lillian Placido. LEMIRE, 49, of Diamond Hill Road, a former insurance company assistant controller, died yesterday at home after an illness. He was the husband of Laura (Hird) Lemire. Born in Pawtucket, the son of Ernest Lemire of Central Falls, and the late Theresa (Bessette) Lemire, and the stepson of Maureen Lemire of Central Falls, he had lived in Central Falls before moving to Cumberland 19 years ago. Mr. Lemire had been the assistant controller at the former CGU Insurance Corp., now Aviva Insurace, North Quincy, Mass., for 18 years before leaving because of illness. He was a 1973 graduate of Central Falls High School, and had received a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in business from Providence College. He also received a CMA from Certified Management Accountants Corp., and attained a certified-life underwriting designation. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling. Besides his wife, father and stepmother, he leaves three sons, Thomas and David Lemire, and Timothy Miller, all of Cumberland. The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from J.J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Aidan Church, Diamond Hill Road. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.

    3. Ida R. Plante Ida R. Plante 1925 - 2004 SPRINGFIELD - Ida (Racine) Plante, 78, of Springfield was Called Safely Home on Wednesday November 17, 2004 with her loving family by her side. She was born in Sainte Anne de Beaupre, Province of Quebec, Canada on November 30, 1925 a beloved daughter of the late Frederick and Rosanne (Boucher) Racine. She moved from Canada to East Longmeadow in 1945 and had lived in Springfield since 1947. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church on Boston Road in Springfield. She was a longtime parishioner of the former Saint Thomas Aquinas Church on Harriet Street in Springfield and a member of the Ladies of Sainte Anne Sodality of the Church. She was also a former longtime captain for the annual Catholic Charities Appeal for the Diocese of Springfield at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church and served her parish as a longtime volunteer for their Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Classes. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Gerard J. Plante who was Called Home on August 27, 1961 at the age of 14 and her beloved husband of 57 years, Albert J. Plante who was Called Home on June 30, 2003. They were married at Sainte Anne de Beaupre on November 10, 1945. She leaves her loving daughter, Helene R. Calvanese and her husband Frank of Westfield. Her four loving granddaughters who cherish her memory, Deborah Calvanese of Springfield, Elizabeth Calvanese of Chicopee, Sarah Calvanese and Amy Calvanese of Westfield. Her dear brother, Gerard Racine of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada. Her dear sister, Jacqueline Racine Lachance of Sainte Anne de Beaupre, Province of Quebec, Canada and her many dear nephews and nieces. She was also predeceased by her ten dear brothers and two dear sisters. Her funeral will be held Monday morning November 22, 2004 at 10:15 a.m. from the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, 7 Chapin Terrace at the corner of Chestnut Street in Springfield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, 405 Boston Road in Springfield.     3. Normand L. Martel Normand L. Martel 1931 - 2004 HOLYOKE - Normand Leo Martel, age 73, of Holyoke,died peacefully on Wednesday November 17,2004 at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. A lifelong resident of Holyoke, he was a son of the late Leo and Laurea (Labarr) Martel and was educated at Immaculate Conception School, Holyoke Trade School, and Western New England College. Normand was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War, and held the position of a Quality Control Engineer at Avery Dennison Corp. until his retirement in 1990. At Dennison, he was a Past President of its Office Union, and had served as a License Commissioner for the City of Holyoke. Normand was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, and a member of the Holyoke Golden Agers. He was fascinated with the art of stained glass, and enjoyed vacationing on Cape Cod with his wife Joan. He leaves his wife of 50 years, Joan R.     3. Daniel E. LeDuc Daniel E. LeDuc 1930 - 2004 WEST SPRINGFIELD - Daniel E. LeDuc, 73, formerly of Springfield, died Monday November 15, 2004, at East Longmeadow Health Care Center. Born in Fall River, the son of the late Daniel A. and Yvonne B. (Quellette) LeDuc, Daniel spent most of his life in the Springfield area. He was in inventory supply for the Unites States Air Force for 20 years retiring in 1968. He also worked for Poleps Brothers Paysaver in West Springfield and Del Liquor Store in Chicopee. He loved to play sports including softball, bowling, and golf. He did a great job playing for the United States Air Force and traveled all over the world. Daniel was also a great donator to Foxwoods. He is predeceased by his first wife, Grace (LaBarre) and his second wife, Edith (Hinkle). He leaves three sons, Arthur and his wife Joan Gauthier of Chicopee, Robert and his wife Donna Gauthier of West Springfield, William R. Born in Northampton December 16, 1936, he was the son of Eva B. (Mongeon) LaFleur of Northampton and the late Donald T. LaFleur. He was educated in Northampton schools, graduated from the Sacred Heart Elementary School in 1951, and later the Northampton High School in 1955. He served in the US Army from 1960-1962 and the US Army Reserves from 1962-1964. He received an associates degree in Business Management from Greenfield Community College in 1980, a bachelors of science degree in Business Administration from North Adams State College in 1985, and also received a certificate in transportation management from the College of Advanced Traffic Management in Chicago, through Holyoke Community College in 1987. He was one of the original employees at Chartpak Co. in Leeds, starting in 1957, leaving in 1991 as their Traffic Manager. He later worked for Renovators Supply in Millers Falls as their Traffic Manager, retiring in 1994 as a Traffic Manager for Chartpak. He was an avid Red Sox fan and was seen on King and Main Streets in Northampton taking his morning and noontime walks, always wearing his fedora hat. He was a member of American Legion Post 344 in Hatfield and was a former of member of the Northampton Elks. Besides his mother he is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy (LaFreniere) LaFleur; his loving children, Daryl G. LaFleur and his wife Jessica of Northampton, Dierdre I. Costigan and her husband Jeffery of Florence, Dale E. LaFleur and her husband Kurt Anderson of Tucson, AZ, and Andrea J. Lichini and her husband Eric Isselhardt of Sykesville, MD; 3 devoted grandchildren, Cassandra and Christina Costigan, and Renee LaFleur; his brother, Eugene E. LaFleur and his wife Judy of Springfield; his sister, Donna A. Akers of Florence; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends. He is preceded in death by a son, Peter L. Luchini, and a sister, Gloria J. Webster.     3. Bernard L. Gelinas Bernard L. Gelinas 1933 - 2004 SOUTH HADLEY - Bernard L. Gelinas, 71, of Pearl St., died Tuesday, November 14, 2004 at his home in West Palm Beach, Florida. Born in South Hadley, son of the late Leon and Laura (Dubuc) Gelinas. Bernie graduated from South Hadley High School in 1953 and Vaughan Barber School, Hartford, CT in 1956. He was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, South Hadley and served on the Parish Council. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during Korea. While in the service he received the National Defense Service Medal. He was the owner of Bernie's Barber Shop, South Hadley for 30 years. Since 1971 to present Bernie was the Assessor for South Hadley and Longmeadow. He was a member of the Hampden and Hampshire County Assessor Association. Bernie was signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1954 as a pitcher and played in the Texas League. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4044, Fairview section of Chicopee and a 4th Degree #1670 Arch Bishop Williams Assembly, an avid sports fan, member of the Egg and I Golf League, and also was a coach for Little League in South Hadley. Bernie was predeceased by his wife, June (Heberle) Gelinas, in 2003; and his sister, Theresa Wailgum, in 2001.He is survived by his son, Bernie Gelinas and his wife Michele of South Hadley; his daughter, Rosemarie McLaughlin and her husband Michael of Holyoke; his sister, Shirley Avery of West Palm Beach, Florida; his brother-in-law, Fr. He worked as a millwright for more than 33 years for Simplex Wire & Cable Co. in Newington, prior to his retirement. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Rochester, and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He built violins as a hobby, and also enjoyed golfing and gardening. His family described him as being a caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was predeceased by seven of his siblings. She was born in Dover on Aug. 29, 1926, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Credit) Caron. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph E. Gagne, who died in 1982. They had raised their family in Somersworth. She was a longtime active member of the ladies American Legion Auxiliary Post 69 of Somersworth and also the VFW. She will be remembered for her friendly, kind, caring manner and her outgoing love for life. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed.
