Umbro III, 56 STANDISH -Vito A. Umbro, III, 56, of Richville Road, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. Born Oct. 16, 1947, he was the son of Vito A. Umbro, Jr. and Antoinette DeFilipp Umbro and grew up in Smithcrossing, Rumford. He graduated from Stephens High School, Class of 1967. Mr. Umbro spent 30 years working in the Forestry and Public Works Departments for the City of Westbrook, retiring April 5, 2002. He spent his summers tending gardens and landscaping. Most recently, he worked as a food demonstrator for Surray, working out of Hannaford in Standish. He was passionate about his family, the New England Patriots and his motorcycle. He was a member of the Limington Seventh Day Adventist Church for over 20 years, where he had been head deacon and treasurer. He also directed the Limington Lanterns Pathfinder Club. Surviving him are his wife of 31 years, Barbara D. (Langevin) Umbro; a son, Vito Anthony 'Tony', IV; daughters, Stephanie Anne and Lisa Marie, all of Standish; a daughter, Rebecca Lynn of Windham; stepmother, Olive (Hillier) Umbro; sister, Teresa and nephew, Joshua, all of Rumford; sister, Anne Marie of Jay. Visiting hours will be held from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, at the Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at White Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church, 97 Allen Avenue, Portland. Reverends Ed Labbe, Bob Farley and Ramon Rodriguez will officiate. In 1921, when she was five, Mariette's family moved to Plattsburgh, N.Y., where she began to study piano, dance and establish herself as a singer. After leaving high school she worked in her father's machine shop located behind the family home. Keeping books, driving the company truck and operating a lathe were some of her duties. During the 1930's and 40's, she sang "songs in the modern manner" with the Rhythm Boys, her eight-piece orchestra. Living in an army town provided her the opportunity to support the war effort by entertaining at dances and events sponsored by the USO and private clubs. Mariette enjoyed a variety of activities and those who knew her best described her as very stylish, with an extremely social and fun-loving spirit. After waiting three years for him during the war, Mariette married Carl Edwin Taylor in Plattsburgh on Dec. 10, 1945, and they moved to West Seattle following their honeymoon by rail through Canada. They were married for 57 years and had two children, Daniel James and Renee Louise; and two grandchildren, Derek Jon and Erika Renee. Mariette and Carl surrounded themselves with a lively group of family and friends and enjoyed going to dances, hosting parties, fishing and traveling. Her home was a warm and welcoming place, where she took pride in sewing, needlework crafts and baking. She filled her gardens with sweet peas, nasturtiums and primroses she grew from seed. Her favorite things were being in the company of those she loved, maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle and sharing a good laugh and an old song over a glass of wine. (Leger) Thebert, 63, of Malone entered into eternal rest with her family and Hospice of the North County by her side on Nov. 26, 2006, after a courageous battle with a long illness. Born in Fort Covington, N.Y., on Nov. 27, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Bertha (Vincelette) Leger. On Feb. 19, 1964, she was united in marriage to Herman P. Thebert at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fort Covington. He survives. Helen graduated from Salmon River Central School in 1960. In 1962, she graduated from Michigan Data Processing College in Detroit, Mich. In 1978, she became involved in the library at Bishop Smith School, she was vital in volunteering and organizing the library, not only at Bishop Smith's, but also in the transition to then Notre Dame School. She eventually became librarian at Holy Family School and devoted herself to the children that came through the library. She continued to do this until her retirement in 2001. Throughout her years she enjoyed reading, quilting, surfing the internet and taking lots of photos of her family. She was a communicate of St. Joseph Church in Malone. She was devoted to her family. During her retirement she spent many hours enjoying her 6 grandchildren, Evan, Maribeth and Daniel Boyea, Jennifer and Emily Plante, and her youngest grandchild 2 and a half year old, Andrew Burgoyne, who brightened her last days. She is survived by her husband, Herman of 42 years; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Laurie McCarthy of Malone, Susan Boyea and her fiancee Heath Jock of Malone, Karen Plante-Lanthier her husband Jim, Julie and Neil Burgoyne, all of Chateaugay; and one son, Paul Thebert and his fiancee Samantha Southworth of Plattsburgh; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Roger and Mary Leger of Corpus Christi, Texas, Leonard and Jen Leger of Vancauver, Wash., and Gerald Leger of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; and one very special niece, Holly Leger of Richmond, Ind., who was a like a daughter to her all her life. She assisted in her care during her illness. She was predeceased by her youngest daughter, Heather L. Thebert on Nov. 18, 1999; and her sons-in-law, Real J. Plante III on Jan. 17, 2004, and Jim McCarthy on March 2, 2005. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at noon at Notre Dame Church in Malone. Burial will be in the old St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Covington, N.Y.
