    1. [CAN-QC-MISSISQUOI] Connection between Abenaki and the surname "Champagne"
    2. Celeste Steele
    3. I have been searching for some time now for my ggg grandmothers ancestry. Her name was Mary Amelia Champaigne b. 1837 Vermont d. 1907 Portland Oregon. She has 3 brothers and 1 sister (that I know of) and to make it harder, with each different census record, their names change spelling so it is difficult to know exactly which is the correct spelling. I have seen it as Champagne, Champaigne, Champlain, Shampang and Shampagny... David Champaigne b. 1846 Highgate Vermont d. 1918 Swanton Vermont George Champagne b. 1856 Canada F d. 1929 Swanton Vermont Paul Champagne b. 1855 Vermont d. unknown (lost track of him) Agusta Champagne b. (abt) 1850 unknown place....this DOB is just a guess based upon letters from Mary Jane (Mary Amelias daughter) Their father is listed as "Abraham Shampang" on Mary Amelias death certificate. I am unable to locate anything on him or Marys mother. There has been rumors in my family for decades that we have Native American somewhere in our ancestry. I have been reading about the Abenaki and the surnames connected with them and I am hoping I found the connection. In some of the documents I have, it talks of Missisquoi. I would love any help that anyone can give me. Sincerely, Celeste
