    1. [CAN-QC-MISSISQUOI] WHITFORDs of Farnham (Waggoner and Ingalls too)
    2. Hi there. Is anyone doing research on the Whitford family of Farnham? I only know Abel (born 1795) was the son of Caleb and that Elizabeth Whitford (Caleb's daughter?) married Jessie Ingalls and they had Merritt. But I'm particularly interested in John Whiftord who lived next door to Caleb in 1825 in Farnham and was probably also Caleb's son. This John married Sophia Waggoner in 1822. They moved and lived in Lockport, Niagara Co., NY at least until 1842, after which time they disappear. Jenette and Oscar, born in the 1820s, seem to have been their children. I can't locate either of the siblings after 1850 when they also lived in Niagara Co. with Sophia's brother, John Waggoner. Interestingly, by 1860 John Waggoner had relocated to Burr Oaks, Iowa, where he ran the same hotel that Laura Ingalls, the writer, was later associated with. There were also other Ingalls in Burr Oaks when the Waggoners lived there. Could they be related to Jessie? I don't know. I'd love to hear from anyone about this family. Thanks much, Linda Waggoner

    3. If you go to the first page for the notaries on the Quebec National Library and Archives site ("from the beginning to 1907") at http://bibnum2.banq.qc.ca/bna/notaires/index.html, you can search by notary's name or region. Note that Iberville and Richelieu are under Montreal. When an asterisk appears before a notary's name, the actual records are also available. This list is currently quite short, but they apparently plan to put them all up online. Hope this helps, Lorraine In Montreal

Just a note I have found many records for our area listed with other Notaries some of who filed papers in the registry office in Iberville for example I do not understand how they have located only one Notary working in Bedford and I am try to get in touch with them to find out why they do not have many more. After all most of us know that the registers office in Beford has most of the records we need. The best thing is to look at the listing of notaries and check out a few with the early dates who filed in the surrounding registry districts .... Montreal is a bit large but there are some of our area's records there also.... If I ever get lucky with obtaining a reply from the people who have put this site up I will hopefully be albe to let you know more

I am looking for information on a sawmill that was in operation around the 1830s-40s on Lot 3, Range 8, in West Sutton, which burned sometime while it was in operation. Brothers Hosea, Ohel and George Wing owned the sawmill. Hosea is my 3rd-great-grandfather. I'd like to know everything there is know about it that might have survived the years. Thank you for any help anyone can give me. Sincerely, Beverly Smith Vorpahl (Spokane, Washington) vorpahls@comcast.net

    3. I just wrote an email, but it might not have been delivered since I'm new to the list and wrote it before confirmation. So, here it is again. I am looking for information on a sawmill operated in the 1800s on Lot 3, Range 8, in West Sutton, which burned sometime along while they were still in business. It was owned by my 3rd-great-grandfather, Hosea Wing and his brothers, George and Ohel. As a time frame: Hosea was born in Dunham in 1818 and married Hulda Beers in 1839 So, I think it would have been in operation sometime around 1835 on. I'd like to know when it was in operation and when it burned -- and anything else about it that's been preserved. Thank you so much, Beverly Smith Vorpahl vorpahls@comcast.net (Spokane, WA)

Best of all, they are fully indexed and free to download (yes, FREE!). Sadly for now the only ones available are for the year 1870. The notary's name was Joseph-Théophile-Lactance Archambault. This is a link to the page http://bibnum2.banq.qc.ca/bna/notaires/05S_CN502S2/index.html?region=05S&dis trict=502 If you look on the left-hand side of the screen you'll see where it says "Index des noms". Here is a good place to start to see if you recognize any names. If you find a name you are interested in,just take note of the page number, then click on "Répertoire chronologique (1870)" and go to the corresponding page that you want to look at. If you can't read french, don't worry as most of the actual document is in English (at least the ones I looked at anyway). If you come across something you don't understand as it's in French, I'd be happy to help you out with that. Hopefully there will be more archives available in future for this area. Good luck!
