    1. [CAN-QC-MISSISQUOI] Connection between Abenaki and the surname "Champagne"
    2. Celeste Steele
    3. I have been searching for some time now for my ggg grandmothers ancestry. Her name was Mary Amelia Champaigne b. 1837 Vermont d. 1907 Portland Oregon. She has 3 brothers and 1 sister (that I know of) and to make it harder, with each different census record, their names change spelling so it is difficult to know exactly which is the correct spelling. I have seen it as Champagne, Champaigne, Champlain, Shampang and Shampagny... David Champaigne b. 1846 Highgate Vermont d. 1918 Swanton Vermont George Champagne b. 1856 Canada F d. 1929 Swanton Vermont Paul Champagne b. 1855 Vermont d. unknown (lost track of him) Agusta Champagne b. (abt) 1850 unknown place....this DOB is just a guess based upon letters from Mary Jane (Mary Amelias daughter) Their father is listed as "Abraham Shampang" on Mary Amelias death certificate. I am unable to locate anything on him or Marys mother. There has been rumors in my family for decades that we have Native American somewhere in our ancestry. I have been reading about the Abenaki and the surnames connected with them and I am hoping I found the connection. In some of the documents I have, it talks of Missisquoi. I would love any help that anyone can give me. Sincerely, Celeste

    1. [CAN-QC-MISSISQUOI] quebec research tips
    2. >From Pam Tessier Believe it or not, there are other sources and there was a genealogical research life before the Drouin appeared on Ancestry. The PRDH is an excellent research source for Quebec records http://www.genealogy.umontreal.ca/en/ and the BMS2000 http://www.bms2000.org/Default.aspx is another one. Both are great subscription sites and well worth the relatively cheap costs. If you are only interested in free sites then try the LDS Pilot Project under Quebec records or visit your local Family History Centre and do it the old fashioned way - microfilm in a film reader and turn a crank or push a button. Check your local library and see if you can find a copy of Rene Jette's Genealogies of the French Families(?) or Cyprien Tanguay's books. Tanguay was on-line but it is not a source I use anymore so you will have to check. FYI, the Drouin collection of transcribed BMD records is also available in a set of books - albeit a bit of hike for some of us to the Canadian Room of the North York Library. The so-called Blue and Red Drouin marriage books are available at branches of the Societe Franco//-Ontarienne d'Histoire et de Généalogie. Try contacting them on-line for a lookup. It will probably cost you something but then these organizations don't exist on air. The Library of Canada will also send you every known marriage with your surname, from the landing in Quebec City to the present, for a very, very modest fee. The Red or 'Petit' Drouin is available on CD from many on-line book stores. >From originals to transcripts, there are a lot of options. Be sure to check out Lorine's Olive Tree Genealogy, she's probably got a few listed that I missed. And of course, you can visit the Penetanguishene Museum and find almost every one of these sources just waiting for you - Quebec repertoires on CD, microfiche, in print or in a computer database. 1. Re: [CAN-QC-MISSISQUOI] Alva Scott, born abt 1821
    2. Dianne Schultz
    3. Ethel, What a big help this is. This whole branch of the family seems to be missing from any of the family trees that are available through ancestry.com, something that I can fix. I've already found a lot of census records but didn't know how to link them. That makes Jonathan Scott the child of Daniel Scott and Lois Hurd, and a brother to Daniel Scott, who married Eunice West. And Lemuel Scott Sr, who married Keziah Martin. Are these three men the only children of Daniel and Lois? Catherine Pettes, the daughter of Charles Pettes and Desire West, married Lemuel Scott Jr, and Drusilla Pettes, another of their daughters, married Lemuel 's brother, Jedediah Scott. Elona Capron and Mary Capron, two of the sisters of the Joseph Capron who married Alva's sister Mary, were married to sons of Thomas West and Meriah Collins. I just recently found out that Thomas West, who died in 1846, was descended from Susanna Soule, the daughter of George Soule, who came over on the Mayflower and her husband, Francis West. There appears to be a connection through an Anna Soule, who married John Pettes, back to one of the son's of this same George Soule. I've come to the conclusion that I've gotten into a never ending project. But that's OK. I have nothing but time. Again, Thanks!!!! 3. Hi Brenda: Jean suggested I contacted you to see if you can find anything on John or Etta (Beach) Chalifoux (Jellifou) in any of your books. They lived in Dunham and died in the early 20th century -1910-1929 timeframe. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
