Hi Nancy, Yes, I can see some of the differences right away. I've just recently published online, so I'm interested in an improved software. Thanks so much for sharing! Hi Nancy, I'm curious why you like Legacy better than FTM. And is it easy to convert from FTM to Legacy? I have a large tribal database I'm working with and would like to use the best program. Right now I'm using FTM 2005 or so. Thanks! Well, I have been using various genealogical software for about 20 years and I just like it best I use the others too, just not as my primary format. The reports are wonderful and I like the online searching that is not just tied to Ancestry I also maintain lots of family web pages and I use its book format for my text Here is a sample of one of my families - see how it hypertexts http://griffincunningham.net/Casner/ Legacy is free to try it -download it today and try it http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ Also do the video tour and you'll see some of the bells and whistles?' The 09 is really really good But I think it's just a matter of personal taste and comfort. All the major genealogical software programs use a gedcom file ( file format ) -so it's very easy to convert or just share your file back and forth between all programs You guys all sound off as to what software you are using I certainly think you should upgrade to a '09 version of something in the world of software 2005 was a looonnngg time ago. :)
I need to get the actual record of Eliza Jane Partlows' baptism in 1842 in Caldwells' Manor, how would I go about getting an certified copy from the government? Carollee Reynolds
Thanks Frank for clarifying I agree I like 2009 I do not however use FTM as my primary genealogy software anymore I use Legacy which is fantastic ! I run and also use FTM, Legacy, Family Tree Legends, Gensmarts and Rootsmagic because all of them have different reporting and utilities that I use. You can buy FTM 2009 right now on Amazon for $89 and you get **Includes a six-month subscription to Ancestry.com, interactive training tutorial, The Family Tree Maker Little Book of Answers, a 25% off coupon for Ancestry DNA and a 15% discount on a professionally printed family history book or poster http://www.amazon.com/Family-Tree-Maker-2009-Platinum/dp/B001B5FHME/ref=sr_1 _3?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1225638764&sr=8-3 shop around! Just pulled my FTM 2009 and realized the "14 day free trial" was for use of ancestry.com; the software itself is probably fine. My grandfather and one of his brothers have been spotted. Now, I can document their story of being on a farm with assurance which is most gratifying. However, I am curious if anyone call give me some ideas as to how these young men from England would have found their ways to these two communities. They probably left England from Southampton in the spring of 1889 after the death of their father. The family today has no idea why they would have selected Quebec. Nor do we have any idea as to their arrival city. If any List member has any ideas on this subject, I would welcome their input. To the best of my knowledge there were no relatives who would have preceded them. Eventually, the brothers made their way to Massachusetts and lived there for the most of their lives. A recent genealogical column in my local paper indicated that proceedings from the Old Bailey in London were available FREE on line. I had not seen this site before and possibly some of us may prefer not to have a look at some of our "dark ancestors", but it does contain a fantastic wealth of data. They may have been 'Home Children' like my grandfather. He, and at least 2 of his siblings came from Liverpool in 1893, at ages 11, 13 & 15 to the Distributing Home in Knowlton QC in 1893, following the death of their mother. From there they were sent out as laborers & often mistreated. Check for more information through the Canadian National Archives website. Hello: I am new to this List. Am trying to locate 1890 census returns for Cowansville and Farnham. I was hoping to find an online source. Family information indicates that my grandfather, Sidney PALMER, and two brothers, Edgar and John Henry (Harry) PALMER arrived from England in 1889 and worked on farms in those two towns for two years. Then, they moved to Massachusetts. I am trying to find any documentation to support this story. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Hi again, The correct French spelling of the surname Gagne is Gagn[e with an acute accent, angling up to the right]. I see that your non-bilingual e-mail program rendered what I had sent as 'Gagn?'. The word 'gagne' [with the accent] is the past participle of the verb 'gagner' - to earn [pronounced the same way as gagne]. Another possible spellling of the surname in French is Gagnier. Gagne is a very common surname in Quebec and can be traced back to France. An interesting website is that of Peter Gagne [in English] at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/9951/ Previous message: The French surname that sounds like Gonyea/Gonyay, etc is Gagné not Gagnon . Gagnon sounds more like Gonyo Bill Brady

REGARDING GAUNYA/GONYEA, ETC.... I suspect that all of these are variants of the French Gagne, meaning "earner" or "wage earner worker," i.e., laborer. What I don't know is whether in New France, there were a few Gagne's whose descendants all spelled their names variously (both sides of Lake Champlain as well as the border are full of them) or whether all or most illiterate immigrants were just considered to be "workers" and given that last name. A few months back I was able to find a schedule which included a service at St Thomas. They will likely have a new schedule on line in the next few months, but this is the place to look. I last visited St Thomas in 1981. The lady next door came over with her key so we were able to see inside the church. She told me she had been present at my parent's wedding. It is sad that so few people are left in the area who would know much about the older families who once lived in Noyan. My grandfather left in 1885 to homestead in South Dakota.
