The Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, written by Samuel Lewis in 1837 is now on line at: http://www.libraryireland.com/topog/index.php I really recommend this for reading, especially if you know the area where your ancestors orignated from in Ireland. Lewis describes the civil parishes and larger towns in wonderful easy to understand language.
