Well, the Irish at that time were emigrating as a result of The Famine which lasted many years, the worse being 1849. Ireland lost two-thirds of their citizens at the time. One-third emigrated to other countries, and one-third died. Many ended up in Canada because both Canada and Ireland were under England rule and they could go to Canada both easier and cheaper than to the US. Many chose to go to Canada, especially those who went to Quebec and Ontario, and then walk across into the US where there were no restrictions like they had for those embarking from ships. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
My Irish immigrants to Canada, first generation, stayed and farmed. Their offspring (and they were prolific!) moved south into Michigan and ultimately to other states. My great grandparents ended up in Montana where they farmed. -----Original Message----- From: Pat Connors [mailto:nymets11@pacbell.net] Sent: Friday, February 17, 2006 9:14 AM To: CAN-ONTARIO-IRISH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Ontario Irish] Ontario Irish from County Cork Well, the Irish at that time were emigrating as a result of The Famine which lasted many years, the worse being 1849.
