    3. This may sound crazy but all I have is a name Fanny b.abt.1803, now she is the wife of Wm Montgomery b.abt 1795 of Derraheen or Drumullen co. Cavan Ireland. Wm is the son of Wm and Frances Matchett no wedding date. There Daughter(Fanny) is Frances Montgomery b. jul 17 1837 & d. 30 nov 1919 married to Archibald McMicheal mar. 11 oct 1858 in Derraheen Co. Cavan Ireland and they Wm and Frances had 13 children with all but the first three born around Turnberry Twp Ontario. Any help or information anyone can find or even advice would help. I realize that only a name is almost impossible but you never know for sure so that is why I'm asking. I hope I get a surprise. Thank You in advance for taking the time to read this. And doubly Thank You if you have any luck. Thanks again, Fran

    3. Thank you so much for some very needed information. I must have misread someone's words re the census records. I only started poking around Ontario on Jan 24. I will be off to the libraries one day next week and will take your message with me. Again, thank you. Census records for Ontario have been taken every ten years since 1851-52 (1861, 1871, 1881, ...). They are available on microfilm at major libraries, including FHS. There is no need to come to Ontario. The most recently released (in 2005) was the 1911 census. As is usual, the earliest ones are often the least complete. 3. Hi Connie Check and see if the 1891 census has a Schedule 2 which lists "deaths in the last twelve months"; Second, check the Ontario Death Index(es) of/from the Ontario Archives (usually available at your nearest large Public Library, or FHS). Ask for MS 937 Reel 5 and/or 6 (you may need to check both, but likely Reel 6). Here's the Ont. Archives link to tell about them: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/interloan/v-di-t.htm get the Registation # from the index (link on how to use: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/interloan/v-dindexes.htm ) Follow the instructional links from there. Once (and if) you find a death registration, check the local papers of that date for an obit. Hope this helps Happy hunting! 3. Dear David, Thankyou for the most informative Email. If Hugh was the son of Joseph who was supposed to have arrived circa 1820 according to the book the "The Rolling Hills" it would be good.He and five brothers who came later, maybe Hugh was a brother of Joseph and they were both sons of Robert Porter born 1760 Carrigasimon as I don't have all his children. I don't see the name Francis who is listed in the Book as another son of Joseph. We corresponded before, but my computer crashed and I lost all my emails etc.so I don't remember if I sent you a file, as I send out lots. The sons of Joseph listed are William, John, Mathew Hugh and Francis. Joseph's father and Hugh's are most important. I will send your websites to Ireland and see if they can figure it out. Excellent websites! I am a descendent of Jane Harrison and Joshua Porter 1826>Robert 1799>Robert 1799>Hugh b. 1735. There is a Joseph born 1807 who could be a brother to Hugh1800. They all named their sons the same names. I will think about this overnight, then there are the B.C. Porters (mine) and the Australian Porters, the Nova Scotia Porters and the ones that stayed home :-) Do you want my Irish file? Many regards Jane, Mission B.C.

    1. Fowler surname in Ontario
    2. Edith Smith
    3. Stories get pretty tongue- tangled within families when what passes for "truthiness" gets passed around among members and so it evidently was so in my Fowler family. I have found census information that indicates my "England born" Great Great Grandfather Fowler may very well have been Irish and my "born at sea coming to America from Scotland" Great Great Grandmother, may very well have been Irish, with both of them possibly in Ontario Province (unknown county) between 1840 and 1846. In the 1880 U.S. Census I have found Mary E. (Fowler) Kane, age 34, born 1846 in Canada, living in Buffalo, Erie, New York with her husband Patrick Kane. Also in their household was May Fowler, Mother in Law, widowed, age 54, bn 1826 in Ireland. The birthplace of Mary's father was said to also be Ireland. I know that places of birth and sometimes ages are incorrect on census records. But, in the 1870 census, also in Buffalo, Erie, New York, I find Mary with Patrick and an Alice Fowler, age 45, in their household. (born in Ireland). I have looked for many years for GGGrandfather Fowler, (Albert or George) bn abt 1821/25, and GGGrandmother Fowler (May or Alice) bn abt 1820/ 26 with no luck. Their son, my Great Grandfather Ezra Lonzo Fowler, was bn 1842 in Ohio, but his parents were not there on any census', and their daughter Mary E. Fowler, was bn in 1846 (I was told in Michigan) Now I find that there were not yearly census' in Ontario, only one in 1871, so I am out of luck for census records and Ontario is too far to go to research in libraries. Does anyone on the list have information on this Fowler family or any Fowler family in that area? It appears that GGGrandfather Fowler died before 1870. Sincerely, Darline Fowler Smith

    3. Just for your information, these convicts & vagabonds would NOT have been transported to Australia in 1737-43. "The eleven ships of the fleet, known today as "The First Fleet". under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip RN took their leave from Portsmouth, England early on Sunday **13 May 1787** bound for a virtually unknown shore eight long months and half a world away. . . . . . Aboard were some 750 convicts from Britian's overcrowded prison system. They were bound for Botany Bay, there to **establish** the first European settlement on Australian soil." 3. This is my first posting to the list: I am try to connect the Porters who settled in Ballyduff and Manvers in Cavan, Durham county East to my Porter families in BallyJamesduff, Carrigasimon,Drumgolan and Clougoh. Joseph Porter and his brother Charles immigrated circa 1820(5 others followed. Joseph had sons Francis, William and Mathew, and Hugh that I know of. Mathew later went to sea and died on a return trip from Australia. I need to know the name of Joseph''s father in Cavan Ireland and his date of birth as I have some info from there back to 1735 to Hugh of Clougoh. Is there anyone searching this name or willing to do a cemetery lookup. Cemeteries of Ontario, Canada NE corner of Porter road(Kawartha Lakes road #32) and Ballyduff road Providence cemetery -Durham Co Darlington Township- NW corner of Bragg and Concession road. That sounds like 2 cemeteries to me, I copied and pasted from the site. I would gladly pay for the lookup and exchange info.I am also looking for Harrison's and Byers. Thankyou ,Jane, BE.C. Canada,

    1. Lytle, Lyttle, Little
    2. Norsky
    3. I am searching for information about my gr-grandfather, born in Alfred, Upper Canada, in 1823. His name was JOHN LYTLE (d. Wisconsin 1893). The family may have also used Lyttle and Little spellings. I have always been told I was of Scottish-Irish heritage. The family was Protestant. John Lytle left Canada about 1850-1852, give/take, for Wisconsin/US. There was one Canadian wife (below, ELEANOR LUNY LYTLE) and four additional US wives and a total of about 15 children. Places mentioned as possibly having family history may be PEMBROKE, WESTMEATH, RENFREW, PRESCOTT, HAWKSBURY. I am most interested in knowing who my gr-grandfather John Lytle’s PARENTS’ NAMES were for sure and also the NAMES OF BROTHERS/SISTERS. WHERE CAN I VERIFY THE 1823 BIRTHDATE IN ALFRED (which I believe to be correct)?? John’s parents MAY have been another John (Little) and perhaps wife Maria/Mariah, both born Ireland. WHERE BORN, IRELAND? BURIED WHERE—NEAR ALFRED?? WHAT CEMETERY? John’s grandparents MAY have been Thomas (Little) and Mary Holmes, both born Ireland, died in Alfred. WHERE BORN IN IRELAND, BURIED WHICH ALFRED CEMETERY? Are there records anywhere showing the relationship of my gr-grandfather JOHN LYTLE to a father/mother named JOHN LITTLE/MARIA(H) and a grandfather named THOMAS LITTLE/MARY HOLMES? WOULD MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES or CENSUS RECORDS be available for a period of time prior to 1823 in the Alfred area? John Lytle married a woman by the name of ELIZABETH (LUNY) around 1844 in PEMBROKE…….She died about 1846 after the birth of one of their two sons, JAMES LYTTLE and CHARLES LYTTLE (b. about 1845 and 1846). Her gravestone is in the Westmeath Union Cemetery. WOULD THEIR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IN PEMBROKE BE FINDABLE? In the early 1800’s, where in Canada would families of Scottish-Irish ancestry (born in Ireland) most likely have landed? FAMILY NAMES related to John Lytle: LYTLE, LYTTLE, LITTLE, HULL, BOSSHARD, FAUVER, SORENSON, BRYANT, KELLIS, PAULSON, BARLOW, ABEL, TURNER US STATES related to John Lytle: WISCONSIN, NORTH DAKOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA, MONTANA, not inclusive. I would be most appreciative of any help anyone can give me. This family is hard to trace in Canada. Jeanne in Montana

    3. Hi Peggy, I hope I'm not suggesting steps already tried, but, have you checked the marriage indexes for Ontario for 1875? Check with your local public library or LDS Family History Centre for this index on microfilm. If they married in 1875, AND if it was registered, it will provide a regisration number (and I think a location?!) with which you can determine which registration microfilm you need to borrow from the Ontario Archives (order through your local libary). The marriage registration should tell you the parents of the bride and groom. (I had a case just like this with a g-g-grandfather in Huron Co.) You might also see if there's a death notice for either William or Jane. Have a look at http://www.collectionscanada.ca/8/12/index-e.html the checklist of Canadian newspapers at for Carman, MB papers. Also, do you know if they are buried in or around Carman? Contact the Manitoba Genealogical Society for cemetery transcriptions at http://www.mts.net/~mgsi/ (home page). Good luck! Let us know Jean S. 3. That is definitely my family. I had found that particular census before. Do you know the exact date of the census? I am trying to determine if Jane was born in 1855 or 1854. I had down Apr 24, 1855 but I found a Jane Russell Spence, christened June 6, 1854 in Lylehill, Antrim, Ireland and wondered if it was her - meaning she would be born in 1854. I was hoping that someone had access to the 1861 and 1871 Censuses as William Robert should be with his first wife on those. Of course, I am ultimately trying to find out both Jane and William's parents. Thanks so much for looking that up for me.
