Still looking for information and pictures of veterans for the Embro West Zorra History Book. This would include current armed forces and any that were not sent overseas, and served only in Canada. The criteria is that they must have lived in West Zorra at some point. Helen Brenneman bren@execulink.com

Hi Everyone: Just a note to say we are progressing well on our History Book for the former Township of West Zorra, in Oxford County. We have worked at the Registery Office for quite sometime, and pretty much done with that. At present we are sending out questionnaires to all local residents, and realize there could be many people in surrounding areas that were past residents or have knowledge of families or histories of the area. We are looking for any information for our book pertaining to family, farms, churches, clubs & organizations, veterans etc. We have enjoyed reading the Perth County History Books so much we are hoping to create a book of the same calibre. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with knowledge of the area. Thanks Helen bren@execulink.com
Hello all, With the December holiday season here I would like to open the list to a discussion of traditions and recipes that you may have that were passed down to you from your ancestors. ***Please post to a new email and please change the subject line before posting. My great grandfather August HANKE b. 12/22/1853 migrated to Tavistock in 1871 from Storkow. He was baptised at the Baptist Church in Tavistock on 6/18/1875. August HANKE migrated to Tavistock because his mother's sister, Dorothea Sophia FISCHER Behrenwald resided there with her husband, Carl Gottlieb August BEHRENWALD. August's sister, Louisa HANKE, migrated to Tavistock in 1872 and August's mother, Wilhelmina FISCHER Hanke and other siblings William, Emelia, Fred and Charles HANKE migrated to Tavistock in 1873 August HANKE married Anna Kunigunda REIDT (b. 11/21/1855 in Hatterode, Kreis Ziegenheim, Hesse, Germany) on November 4, 1877 in Tavistock. Anna migrated to Tavistock in 1873 with her mother Elizabeth QUEHL Reidt. Anna REIDT's father Johannes REIDT died November 8, 1869 in Hatterode. Johannes REIDT was a school teacher. He with other men of the village Hatterode went into the Herr's forest to gather their families supply of wood. He was injured by a falling tree and broke his back. He died by the time his friends brought him back to his home. Elizabeth QUEHL Reidt was the daughter of Heinrich QUEHL and Anna Catherina LOTZ.
My genealogical interest in the Tavistock area concerns the GEMMER family and their nearby relations (DIPPLE/DIPPEL, KALBFLEISCH and possibly BECKER): John G. Gemmer - b. 27 June 1821 in Hesse-Darmstadt; d. 9 November 1904 in South Easthope, buried at Zion United Church Cemetery in Tavistock. John came to Canada sometime between 1851 and 1854 with his brother Henry. John purchased a small farm on Lot 20, Concession 3, South Easthope in 1860, where he lived until his death. Catherine Gemmer (née BECKER) - b. 5 January 1831 in Hesse-Darmstadt; d. 11 June 1886 in South Easthope. John and Catherine's children: Elizabeth Gemmer - b. 12 June 1854 in South Easthope; d. 19 November 1941 in Winnipeg, buried at Sanford, Manitoba. Elizabeth married John DIPPLE of Pilkington Township on 4 May 1874. Elizabeth was my great-grandmother. Henry Gemmer - b. 4 July 1856 in South Easthope; d. 28 January 1940 in Tavistock; never married. Catherine Gemmer - b. 4 January 1860 in South Easthope; d. 24 July 1911 in South Easthope; never married. William Gemmer - b. circa 1862/64 in South Easthope; d. in childhood. Mary Gemmer - b. 7 June 1866 in South Easthope; d. 5 June 1925 in Tavistock; never married. Caroline Gemmer - b. 31 May 1869 in South Easthope; d. 6 June 1921 in Crookston, Minnesota. Caroline married Conrad KALBFLEISCH, presumably also from the Tavistock area. John's brother: Henry Gemmer - Henry appears to have settled in South Easthope at the same time as his brother, but later moved to Wallace Township, Perth County, sometime after the 1861 census. What can you tell me about the family of Otto, and Christina Jung, in particular the son Fred Jung? I only found them recently on the cdn 1901, and 1906 censuses in Rosthern, Sask, purely by luck. Fred *may* be my grandfather. His year of birth was about 1898, as is the one on the census. I was alway under the impression my grandfather was born in Germany, and came to Canada. When I do not know. The family in the census were all born in Canada though. I was told my grandfather married my grandmother in Saskatchewan, so he obviously had to have lived there at some point. The marriage would have taken place in the early 1930s, maybe at Maple Creek. I am researching the Preiss, Gimbel, Krug, and Jung families in and around the Tavistock region. Regarding Sharon's query of the Otto Jung family. Otto's wife is Christine Gimbel who was my GG Aunt. Her older sister Anna was my Great Grandmother and was married to Christian Preiss son of Wilhelm Preiss. Both the Preiss and Gimbel families came from Germany. Hope to be of more help down the road. Hi List: Since I last posted, listed below is my updated family history: Edward Jaeck born 1815 Soufflenhein, Alsace, Bas Rhin, France died 1898 East Zorra Township. He came to Canada with first wife, Madelaine Schlosser and three children and first settled in Woolwich Township. Ferdinard - after 1861 census no further information about Ferdinard Valentin - after 1866 St. Boniface Church census no further information about Valentin Louis - see below ... In 1858 Edward married Margaretha Groh daughter of Conrad and Sibilla Deider from Kossuth. They had the following children Gustav Henry Phillipina known as Bena Annoinette known as Nettie Edward George Francis Xavier John Magdelana known as Lena Clemens my g grandfather. Edward and family appear on the 1871 census living in East Zorra Township. Land records indicate that he purchased Lot 28, Concession 14, East Zorra on December 31, 1871 East Zorra Township. Louis Yack married Catherine Kaufman (daughter of Conrad and Margaret). They moved to Chepstow, Bruce County where Louis ran a hotel. They had Annie who married Michael Schlosser, Albert married ?, William married Regina Miller and George married ?. Gustav Yack married Catherine Matilda Noonan and moved to Bathurst Township, Lanark County. Two daughters - more research to do on this branch. Henry Yeck married Annie Sherman and remained in the East Zorra area. Five children - more research to do no this branch. Philippina/Bena married Henry Kaufman (son of Werner and Anna Margaret Kaufman). She moved with to Clanwilliam, Manitoba. Several children - more research on this branch. Nettie Yack married John P Kaufman (son of Nichlous and Elizabeth Wettlaufer). Nettie was his second wife. He first married Charlotte Langdon and had three children, Annie, John Edwin and Milton. Nettie and John had five children - Maggie married James Wettlaufer, Clinton - died young, Bertha Olga married L. A. Henry, Ella married Patton and Eva married Sims. George Yack moved to Michigan. I have found George and family on the various American census. Francis Xavier Yeck marred Elizabeth Parker and eventually moved to Woodstock. He had two children William and Fred. Wiliam moved to Detroit and Fred moved to London, Ontario. John Yeck - died young Lena Yeck - never married Clemens Yeck is my g grandfather. He married Daisy Hopson (British Home Child). Daisy's sister Gertrude - also a home child married Joseph Iutzi/Jutzi also from East Zorra Township. Clemens lived in Cassel and I understand operated a sawmill and was a carpenter. According to my uncle, several of the barns he built are still standing. They had four children, Albert Wilfred who married Anna Lois Riesberry (daughter of Albert Arthur Riesberry and Annie Bond from Bright), Gertrude Irene who married Charles Chalkley, Walter who married Rachel Ketchabaw and Earl who died young. The name Jaeck has changed many times and eventually by 1900 it had three versions. The children of Edward's brother Joseph who settled in the Walkerton area used Yaeck, Edward's son Louis, Gustav and George used Yack and the others used Yeck. Joan
