"mulatto". I did my DNA and found the same. I did see on a census from Hawaii that stated Mulatto =not native. Has any one else seen that? Lady Patricia The Canadian "NELSON" Dictionary describes the term as (1) a PERSON HAVING ONE WHITE AND ONE BLACK PARENT (2) A PERSON OF MIXED WHITE AND BLACK ANCESTRY The origin of the word is evidentally SPANISH !!!!!!!!!!!! The Americans ( Bless Them ) in the days before Abe Lincoln declared everyone equal, had a term for every mixture of black and white Ancestry. The one that comes to mind is QUADROON .... a person with one quarter Black Ancestry ......... one of your four Grandparents were of black Ancestry !!!! Seem to recall that these terminologies had a basis in law, and determined your particular " rights " to inheritance, land ownership, and a host of other things, which thankfully are now HISTORY. Unfortunately, many of these past terms had derogatory usage .... which is why I am (described as ) a WASP ..... White Anglo Saxon Protestant and most of the Neighbourhood are Pure White and Protestant !!!!!!!!!! Right now, some reader is probably preparing a pot full of tar-and-feathers :-) All in the interest of History, Paul Robins

    3. Well Paul, if anyone wants to get huffy, they need to invent a time machine that would enable them to go back and undo the terms in use back then. The terms were used to describe "property owned" and each term meant something of importance for that time period. The saddest thing is some of the States may still have laws defining "black". Even one drop in a 99.99% white person meant they HAD to list themselves as black! I seem to recall that was Louisiana and happened to a woman maybe 10-15 (maybe 20) yrs ago. Wish I could recall more of the details. I load down on trivia and can't remember anything important! How bout the 80 yr old man down in Va. that quit smoking 50 yrs before and was cleaning his attic. For some reason he decided he wanted a cigarette and caught his house on fire! Now what good is it to remember that? Ruth

    3. Oddly enough Ruth, I am the same way and was musing about it this very morning. I suspect that it is an inbred cautionary device probably passed through the generations of grannies who said not to run with scissors or try to fly like a bird. To remember the dramatic (and drastic) events will stop you in your tracks in case you are tempted to follow that path. Even if you are a non-smoker, or don't even have an attic, you know that you would never light a cigarette if you happened to find one in someone else's attic. Cheers! Doreen ===== From: "R. 3. To Paul and Lady Patricia:- Possibly many are familiar with Nova Scotia -- my ancestors arrived at Shelburne with an American habit - slaves - after my gr.gr.gr. granfather was in prison because they lost at one battle. This was 1783. As soon as they arrived at this British colony, the black slaves had to go -- the younger ones were given land to farm and formed the town of Birchtown, first black settlement in Nova Scotia. Over the years they drifted to Liverpool -- and I guess I was young when I expected to see a black couple together, but parents of a dear friend were black and white, My husband was brought up in a totally white community and was suddenly awakened when he saw a very tall black man hugging and kissing me -- good thing he was president of the local Legion! My husband then became acquainted with the brother of a man killed overseas in 1944, one of my friends. Should anyone ever see WOMEN with very pale carroty coloured hair, they are descendants of slaves picked up in Gambia, Africa. The colour is real, but has to be pale. Also, at Sunnybrook, my husband had four black caregivers - he died in the arms of one.
