Hi Muriel, These "free" online family tree websites are popping up all over the internet. This one is produced by Midatel TecnologĂa, S.L. in Barcelona (Spain). We do caution list members to check out the details of any online family tree "software" where you add your personal family tree data to any online database. Nothing in life is "free". Insofar as there are real costs to designing and maintaining a database web site, supporting large amounts of server data storage space and internet bandwidth usage, it is unrealistic to believe that providers of such space do not need an economic model to cover those costs and provide a profit for shareholders of the company that owns the site -- in this case a registered commercial company. Economic models vary. Some eventually sell access to you data by subscription to others, others use the website content provided by users to attract internet traffic to paid advertising on their sites, and still others use online free offers to harvest email addresses and other contact info. One way or the other, revenue has to be generated for the business model to survive in the longer term. That said, make sure that you throroughly check out any online service before adding your personal data. Ask plenty of questions. Is or will the online entity resell your data either on a retail or wholesale basis? Does the user agreement license the site owner to control your contibuted info? Can you be blocked from your own data now or at any time in the future? Can you easily and permanently remove the data should you decide to? Will your contact info or email address be used for marketing purposes? We have no personal experience with "Genoom". It could be the best thing since sliced bread -- however I recommend due diligence prior to comitting your personal family data to any online service.
