Thanks, Malcolm: I sent a memo to Rootsweb -- only assistance I received was a list of email addresses for certain occasions. However, he was listed as "jedade" on the list of subscribers and the program genoom@genoom.com was also listed. The JEDADE is no longer a subscriber. Rick Roberts of Global Genealogy said he never heard of it. Will all the subscribers not mention this again -- someone is harvesting emails from Barcelona, Spain or elsewhere. The registration details are: --------------------------------------- Registrant: Midatel Tecnologia, S.L. C./ Gran Capitan 2-4 Nexus I Building Barcelona, Barcelona 08034 Spain Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com) Domain Name: GENOOM.COM Created on: 30-Sep-06 Expires on: 30-Sep-09 Last Updated on: 27-Jun-07 Administrative Contact: Diaz, David soporte@midatel.com Midatel Tecnologia, S.L. C./ Gran Capitan 2-4 Nexus I Building Barcelona, Barcelona 08034 Spain 34932061848 Domain servers in listed order: NS5.SECURESERVER.NET NS6.SECURESERVER.NET Registry Status: clientRenewProhibited Registry Status: clientTransferProhibited Registry Status: clientUpdateProhibited Registry Status: clientDeleteProhibited --------------------------------- The registrant doesn't necessarily actually publish that particular web page, i.e., the first "genoom" part of the <genoom.genoom.com>, although it would be unusual for a genuine ISP to allow the use of his registered name as a page reference. I can only guess that this is a rather clumsy attempt to obtain information on people for nefarious purposes. It seems highly unlikely that anyone from Spain would be running a genuine genealogy business in Canada. I don't particularly want to comment on the list because there is a lot of guess work involved - and people seem to headed in the right direction - i.e., ignore it and move on. One other point, although I'm a bit confused by some of the comments on the list, but it is simplicity itself to set an automatic text recognition going on the list archives and to "harvest" all the e-mail addresses of anyone who has ever posted. As I say, the site rejected my attempt to view it saying it would only respond to specific browsers. I'm a little worried that this may be because it is set up to download mall-ware into those particular browsers. So, if anything, it would be wise to encourage people NOT to go and investigate it just in case their virus and spy-ware protection isn't quite up to "snuff." Offered as "techie" help (and written after midnight - so probably full of errors) please feel free to use as you feel appropriate. Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc.
